Analysis of current global AI developments with a focus on Europe

by Tobias Straube, Dr. Olaf Groth
Europe has to play a leading role in key digital technologies such as artificial intelligence. This was not only emphasized by Ursula von der Leyen in her inaugural speech as President of the EU Commission. It is also the tenor of numerous European AI strategies. In terms of this claim, our new study confirms that Europe has enormous untapped potential. If Europe wants to compete with the leading AI powers in this basic technology of digitization, the weaknesses of its ai innovation ecosystem must be addressed in a decisive manner.

In 2017, Finland was the first European country to present its own artificial intelligence (AI) strategy. Since then, a total of 22 countries and the EU itself have done so. The direction of travel is clear: Europe wants to use the economic and societal potential of AI, and to become an AI-leader internationally. To achieve this, Europe is focussing on the creation of a competitive AI-innovation ecosystem that, through a human-centred approach, should advance trusted AI solutions. Excellence and trust are the guiding principles. But where does Europe actually rank in international comparison with leading AI powers?

The new study in collaboration with Cambrian Futures not only addresses this very question. It will also analyze significant trends in research, commercialization and policy in the field of artificial intelligence. On the one hand, this allows the deficits in Europe's AI innovation ecosystem to be clearly identified. On the other hand, forward-looking recommendations for action can be developed that allow Europe to actively shape the digital age and maintain its competitiveness in the long term.

So if you are interested in the future of AI and in Europe's innovation policy, we kindly invite you to download our new study and our In Short, which summarizes the results and recommendations of our new study.
