The national UN-Associations are members of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA). Many UNAs have a Model United Nations Program, and conduct Model United Nations Club activities in universities and high-schools as well as many other public outreach activities in the areas of democracy and international diplomacy.

Worldwide more than 200,000 high school and university students across roughly 10,000 Model UN (MUN) school clubs participate every year in 400 MUN conferences held worldwide. Model United Nations conferences not only give students first-hand knowledge about the work of the United Nations, but also help prepare tomorrow's leaders to deal with global challenges. So far 13 school Model UN clubs in the UAE have been established. With greater support, resources and action oriented stakeholders, this number can grow substantially.

On Tuesday, May 18th in Abu Dhabi, AYVF with support of KAS, will launch the Task Force Meeting to officially establish the UNA-UAE. The World Federation of United Nations Association Secretary General and Chief Finance Officer will also preside over this meeting and working session.

The goals of the Task Force Meeting are: explain the UNA model; discuss and gain feedback on UNA-UAE proposed activities; create the Charter which sets the structure of the organization; to fill key leadership positions of the UNA-UAE; and to form relevant Committees to support the overall structure.

There is no obligation implied by your attending this session, however, it is a session with very specific outcomes and your participation as a stakeholder, we believe, is invaluable.

The UNA-UAE mission is to:

•Build cohesion among business, academia, political leaders to support schools in the area as to public policy and national civics education for youth

•Establish a dialogue between young leaders and community stake holders

•Promote Model UN Clubs as educational programs in schools across the country

•Link MUNs in UAE with MUNs at an international level beginning regionally

•Create and promote global youth humanitarian campaigns

•Develop fun and engaging community programs and awareness campaigns

•Gather data and publish White Papers relevant to civics, public policy, diplomacy

  • It is NOT anticipated that the UNA-UAE will undertake Advocacy or Policy work

The impending UNA-UAE will be a member of the World Federation of United Nations Associations, and will operate in accordance with the United Nations’ objectives, with a particular focus on youth development. It will support the UN’s principles, promote its mission, and strengthening its presence in the Middle East, while also encouraging internal and international collaboration within the region and other Member States of the UN throughout a number of community programs and high profile conferences annually.
