Women’s rights in traditional societies: The South African example - Regional Programme Gulf States

Sizani Ngubane founded the Rural Women's Movement (RWM) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) twelve years ago under her leadership it has grown to a membership of nearly 50 000. She has inspired thousands of indigenous women to become part of the movement with a vision to assist in the advancement of women in rural communities. Her stance has always been A-political although she has pushed to have more women elected to decision-making bodies, Local and National Government. Part of the work she does is to train women for such responsibilities. Members of the organisation are all reliant on land which offers a mean of alleviating poverty, generating income and paying for education. Women however have difficulty accessing land in their own right. They don’t have independent rights to land which is still attached to their male relatives. Furthermore women are not recognised as independent farm tenants although more than 80 percent of all agriculture work in Africa is done by women.
Sizani Ngubane will also speak at the conference “From Private Action to Public Good” jointly organized by KAS and INSEAD on June 2, 2011 at the INSEAD Abu Dhabi campus.
