Roundtable and Discussion: Parliamentary Oversight - Rule of Law Programme Middle East and North Africa
Workshop
Details
One of the main challenges for the function of the parliament is its weakness on overall oversight of the government work, particularly its weakness on oversight of governmental procurement bids and contracts.
And how can parliament guarantee the independence of the third power, the judiciary? What is its role in this context? How can the relationship between the legislative and judicial powers be clarified and therewith strengthened? It must be clear, that the judiciary is independent and the administrative judiciary alone rules on the conflicts between state entities, including the other two powers, so also on conflicts including the parliament, when perhaps it is critical of governmental dealings.
Based on these thoughts and questions, the Rule of Law Programme Middle East and North Africa of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) in cooperation with the Lebanese Foundation for Permanent Civil Peace (LFPCP) is organizing a whole day roundtable in which key speeches will take place, that will present the main challenges to exercise effective parliamentary oversight on the government and what are the relevant recommendations. This project is also in collaboration with the Lebanese Parliament, the Training Institute of Arab Parliaments and the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union.
With the participation of jurists, lawyers, judges, parliamentarians, ministers, legal experts, law students and civil society actors, the workshop will take place at the Lebanese parliament on Thursday the 28th of April 2022 at 9:00 am.
