The Rule of Law FORUM aims to cover current and relevant regional legal topics. Its overall goal is to highlight and discuss current dynamics and happenings within the scope of the rule of law in the Middle East and North Africa region. From 26 to 27 September, 2018, leaders of judicial training institutes from the MENA region and Europe gathered in Beirut to exchange experiences and best practices on the organization and methods of judicial training. During the two-day workshop organized by the Rule of Law Programme Middle East / North Africa of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in cooperation with the Institute of Judicial Studies of Lebanon and the Lebanese Foundation for Permanent Civil Peace (LFPCP) the participants focused on key aspects of judicial training such as training schemes, practical training and the organization of judicial training institutes.

Undue influence on the judiciary and how to protect judges against it

On September 12, 2018 the Rule of Law Program Middle East / North Africa of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, in cooperation with Maison du Futur, organized a workshop titled “Dynamics of Judicial Independence: Undue influence on the judiciary and how to protect judges against it - A Comparative Regional and International Perspective.” Judges and legal experts gathered to examine different mechanisms adopted by judicial entities to protect the individual judge against undue influence and pressure.

From 22 to 23 March, 2018, the Rule of Law Programme Middle East / North Africa of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung organized in cooperation with the Constitutional Council of Lebanon a workshop on “Procedures for the Protection of Fundamental Rights: Challenges and Trends - Comparative Arab and International Perspectives”. On this occasion, constitutional judges and legal experts from the MENA region gathered in Beirut to provide a comparative analysis on the development, challenges and effectiveness of constitutional review procedures in selected countries of the MENA region.

On Saturday, February 17, 2018, the “Lebanese Constitutional Dialogue“ hosted the third panel discussion, this time on issues of the protection of fundamental rights, at the premises of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Beirut. Theory and reality of the Lebanese Constitution, its relevance to the rule of law and the individual citizen – these are cross-cutting points of reference for the topics chosen by the participants to be discussed together with of experts in the field.

The Principle of Subsidiarity in the Satute of the Arab Court for Human Rights

Workshop

The Konrad Adenauer Foundation's Rule of law Program for the Middle East/North Africa organized with the Lebanese Center for International Studies and the Faculty of Law and Political Science of the Notre Dame University a two-day workshop on the Principle of Subsidiarity in the Statute of the Arab Court for Human Rights. The two-day workshop was addressed to Human Rights legal experts and analyzed the interpretation of Article 18 of the Statute of the Arab Court for Human Rights in the light of the jurisprudence and case law of existing international courts and bodies.

International Mechanisms for Protecting Human Rights

The Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the Lebanese Bar Association, and the Lebanese Foundation for Permanent Civil Peace held their symposium on "International Mechanisms for protecting human rights and their efficiency" on the occasion of the Human Rights Day, which was celebrated on December 10th last Saturday, as commemoration of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10 December 1948 by the General Assembly of the United Nations, which was celebrated this year for the 68th time.
