International stakeholders’ conference on the Optional Protocol to the ICESCR

This report covers the proceedings of the international stakeholders’ conference on the Optional Protocol to the International Convention on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (OP-ICESCR) that took place at the Whitesands Resort and Spa in Mombasa,Kenya between 2nd and 3rd September 2010. The conference was co-organized by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) under the aegis of its Rule of Law Program for Sub Saharan Africa and the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions.

CONSTITUTION OF THE ASSOCIATION OF NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS INSTITUTIONS IN EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY PARTNER STATES

Konrad Adenauer Stiftung under the aegis of its Rule of Law Program for Sub Saharan Africa facilitated the formation of the Association of The National Human Rights Institutions of the EAC Partner States in 2008 whose main objective is to develop and enhance a common understanding and strategies on the promotion and protection of human rights in the region. The Association's Constitution that governs its operations was adopted in Kigali, Rwanda in April 2010.

Regional Workshop on the Horn of Africa

KAS convened a regional workshop on the Horn of Africa in Djibouti at a time when the crisis-ridden region is facing defining moments such as the referendum on Southern Sudan’s independence in 2011, the future of the Somali state among others. KAS assembled high ranking government officials and representatives from the academia and the Civil Society to share and draw lessons and experiences from conflicts and different approaches to deal with them both within and beyond the region, and on how to balance cultural and ethnic diversity so as to enhance unity, stability and development.

CONFERENCE REPORT OF NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS INSTITUTIONS IN THE EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY

The National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in the East African Community (EAC) Conference was held in Kigali, Rwanda on 27th and 28th October 2009. The conference brought together National Human Rights commissioners from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.

Juni 2008 in Entebbe, Uganda, will das Rechtsstaatsprogramm Subsahara der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Strategien entwickeln, um die Unabhängigkeit der Dritten Gewalt in Afrika vorwärts zu bringen.
