According to the Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria, more than half a thousand people were killed in two days in three cities of Zonkwa, Kafanchan and Zangon Katak, in Southern Kaduna State. The more than 500 people killed in northern Nigeria were mostly Muslim. The riots between Christians and Muslims erupted after the announcement of the results which declared the incumbent President the winner.

Amnesty International has raised alarm over the human rights situation in Côte d'Ivoire. The population lives under an atmosphere of terror. Informed sources have reported looting and virtually no civilians but only armed men in some parts of the country. These armed men wander in the bush, many of them without food and without medication.

Journalists and the Rule of Law

COTE D’IVOIRE : UNCERTAINITY AND CONFUSION

Since December 2010, Cote d'Ivoire has been in a crisis following Laurent Gbabgo's refusal to acknowledge the election of the internationally recognized President Alassane Quattara and subsequently to leave power. Among the many parties that have intervened in the crisis are the UN and ECOWAS which gave Gbabgo an ultimatum to leave by 24 March. Gbabgo ignored this ultimatum.

Kenya’s Vice President started the second round of shuttle diplomacy to lobby for the deferment of the country’s post election violence case at the ICC by a year. He was scheduled to meet with the UN secretary general Ban Ki Moon on Tuesday March 8 and with US officials the following day.
