The workshop will bring together some of the leading players on the continent including judges, lawyers, representatives of Judicial Service Commissions, representatives of regional Bar and Bench Associations and representatives of select civil society organisations working in the area of access to justice and administration of justice in general to discuss inter alia, the gravity of judicial corruption, its impact on the independence of the judiciary in general and the right to access to justice in particular; effective and viable ways of fighting judicial corruption in Africa as well as identify best practices from their respective countries and regions.

Training for South Sudanese Prosecutors and Investigators on International Crimes

including SGBV Crimes

In light of recent calls for increased national accountability for serious crimes, the UN Mission in South Sudan Rule of Law Advisory Section (“UNMISS”) and UN International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals Office of the Prosecutor (“OTP”),in collaboration with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung will conduct an intensive capacity building course for senior national investigators and prosecutors from South Sudan. This skills-based course will endeavour to build understanding of international criminal law and procedure; and share lessons learned in the investigation and prosecution of international crimes.

Conference on safeguarding the independence and conditions of service of judicial officers

The purpose of the conference is to develop viable proposals on how to address a number of issues impacting on judicial independence and conditions of service for judicial officers in Africa. The forum will make resolutions and promote their position at the 2019 International IAJ annual meeting that is scheduled to take place in September 2019. The conference will be conducted in collaboration with the Judicial Officers Association of South Africa, the Democratic Governance and Rights Unit - UCT and the International Association of Judges.

In der vergangenen Woche fand die Fachkonferenz zum Thema „Das südliche Afrika nach dem Wahljahr 2019“ statt. Im Rahmen eines Expertengesprächs in Berlin (Kooperationspartner: SWP) und einer öffentlichkeitswirksamen Veranstaltung in Freiburg (Kooperationspartner: Arnold-Bergstraesser-Institut) wurde diskutiert, was die Wiederwahl der regierenden Befreiungsbewegungen für die politische Entwicklung der Länder bedeutet und welche Herausforderungen sich darauf für die deutsche Zusammenarbeit mit diesen Ländern ergeben.
