Better civic awareness should help people make better decisions at the ballot box, which is why the media is often enlisted to help promote key issues – especially during an election cycle. In addition, the media does try to use its platform to tell truth to power.

However, without public input, South Africa’s mainstream media outlets often ignore alternative perspectives on key issues and end up simply reinforcing their own biases or underlying beliefs. In effect, and perhaps unwittingly, the media are increasing the country’s cultural polarisation instead of helping us reconcile our differences.

This is why community-driven media and their unique perspectives are so important. These journalists can cover key issues from a variety of angles and help the broader public understand their wider affect.

Facilitated by respected consultant and CEO of Thuynsma & Associates Heather A. Thuynsma this intense workshop is aimed at community-driven media and intends to bolster their ability to cover key issues ahead of and during the 2016 Elections. The 3-day course intends to help journalists, citizen journalists, station producers, and editors refine their skills to:

- Appreciate and critically comment on political issues and election dynamics

- Trust their instincts to explore good political stories at the grassroots level

- Sharpen their writing, editing and reporting skills

- Become more comfortable with political and social science research methods and results

- Help them work with civil society organisations more effectively

As this is an intense and highly sort after workshop. Seats are limited to 25 applicants only.
