David Barnard is an extreme-marathon athlete and often participates in sporting events as an activist for causes he supports. He is vice-president at Techsoup Global (Africa), the largest not-for-profit provider of technology assistance services to NGOs and libraries worldwide. His areas of expertise include the role of international development, funding community and NGO sector in Southern Africa. In November 2014 he trekked 250 km across the Antarctic Wilderness in support of a renewable energy project by Greenpeace.
