Details

On 4th June, the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) in partnership with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) hosted a well attended Speaker's meeting at the Mountain Club in Cape Town with South African born journalist and New York Times columnist Roger Cohen as the guest speaker. Cohen's presentation focused on the question what Trump means for South Africa and the world as well as what South Africa means to the U.S.

Cohen described South Africa as a young nation, a liberal democracy with more fragile institutions than the U.S, a country that can survive a corrupt and relentless kleptocracy and come through intact with a new leader, Cyril Ramaphosa. Additional speakers were Tony Leon, former Leader of the Democratic Alliance and Sheila Camerer, Chairperson of SAIIA Western Cape, who shared their views and insights on the topic. Afterwards, the audience was able to ask questions, raise concerns or clarify certain issues that were raised during the speeches and discussions.
