Forum

CANCELLED: The Power of Human Rights and Power Politics in the UNSC

WITS University

The Foreign Policy Forum: Regional Powers in Global Politics accompanies South Africa's membership in the UN Security Council during 2019-2020. It consists of a series of six round tables each dedicated to a particular theme. The overarching topic is the role of regional powers in global affairs which is characterized by a return of great power politics and erosion of multilateralism. Each round table consists of a select group of local and international experts. In this fourth event we are discussing the role human rights are playing in the Security Council. Key questions to be discussed are: Is the UN Security Council the right place to discuss human rights issues? Should human rights issues be discussed more frequently? How to discuss human rights violations with great powers? Is there an instrumentalization of human rights for power politics?

Exploring the ramifications of the Refugees Amendment Act
