The event was organised by Women and Land in Zimbabwe (WLZ) in collaboration with KAS, Village Headman Mfiri and a media expert. The 110 participants who managed to register included 8 village heads, two chiefs and the lady Councilor for Ward 5. The majority (more than 70%)of participants were women The intended outcome for this first community awareness outreach in Zimbabwe was to ensure that women are informed about their land tenure and land-use rights and begin to demand them. The methodology of the outreach involved presentations from KAS and WLZ, poetry and drama displays from community members. The emphasis in all presentations was on how and why women should be promoted to access, own and control land and natural resources. The drama highlighted and denounced the way village heads respond to women when they ask for a piece of land. It also illustrated the importance of training for both men and women in knowing their land rights, procedures in acquiring land, and claiming land rights from the duty bearers who are the traditional leaders. The use of community radio, which was broadcasting the event live highlighted the central message on women’s ownership of land. The community radio has a listenership audience of more than 10, 000 people in communities around Shurugwi district and it is very popular in the area.
