Mobilisation and Advocacy: Keys to Effective Youth Political Participation

On 03 March, the University Forum on Governance (UNIFOG) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) partnered to hold the first POLA-LAB workshop in Lira, Northern Uganda. The platform for political leadership advancement aims to mentor effective young political and community leaders by training them in the areas of political and social mobilisation, advocacy and political economy analysis.

Understanding the High Level Revitalization Forum and Its Mediation Role in the South Sudan Conflict

On the 2nd March 2018, the Network of South Sudanese Civil Society Organizations in Uganda (NOSSCOU) organized a public dialogue to discuss the role of the current IGAD mediated High Level Revitalization Forum (HLRF). The dialogue, co-organized with the International Youth for Africa (IYA) and supported by KAS brought together 160 South Sudanese politicians from both SPLM-IO and SPLM-IG and civil society actors with a core aim of stimulating constructive conversations about the prospects of the HLRF talks and its likely implications to receive peace in the conflict ravaged country.

How Local Governments Can Make Use of Social Media to Enhance Civic Engagement and Access of Information

A systematic flow of information from local governments to their electorate is inevitable to assure good governance, transparency and accountability within the democratic system of Uganda. CEMCOD (Centre for Media Literacy and Community Development) has conducted a 3-day training in cooperation with KAS from 20th – 22nd February, in order to train local leaders of Masaka region about the effective use of social media to enhance civic engagement and information access for society.

Refresher Training: How Can District Women Councilors Enhance their Participation in the Political Field?

KAS, together with ACFODE (Action for Development) has conducted a refresher training in Apac from 14th to 15th February, to strengthen gender equality in the political sphere and equip female district councilors with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively take part in the political decision-making process.

Promoting Good Governance and Collaboration among Appointed and Elected Leaders at the District Level

From 12th – 13th February, KAS together with the Directorate for National Guidance (DNG) conducted a training for district leaders in Masindi, in order to promote political pluralism and stronger collaboration among the appointed and elected leaders at the local government level.

Training the Next Generation of High-Qualified Journalists

This year, KAS is partnering with Media Challenge Initiative and DW Academy to launch the very first Next – Gen Journalist Fellowship Program. It is an aggressive 6-month multimedia journalism training given to the best 25 students out of 12 universities in Uganda. On 8th–12th January 2018 the fellowship kicked off with a first training, whereby professional journalists from different media sectors combined report assignments and overall trainings in online, radio and television journalism for all fellows.

Access to timely and relevant information is a lifeline of good governance

Access to information is a fundamental human right recognized by international human rights instruments including article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which provides that, “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers”

Football Tournament Unites South Sudanese Youth in Uganda

On Sunday, 11th February 2018, South Sudanese students at various universities in Uganda contested in a football challenge as a uniting factor for all regardless of political and social/cultural differences.

Debating about the structure of a post-conflict South Sudan

Due to continuous violence in South Sudan since the outbreak of the conflict in 2013, the IGAD countries will soon start the 2nd phase of the High Level Revitalization Forum (HLRF) to promote a revitalized and stable peace process within the country. Therefore, KAS in partnership with the Center for Peace and Justice and the African Youth Action Network (AYAN) organized another roundtable discussion at Makerere University. Different members of Civil Society Organizations (CSO) discussed about sustainable solutions for a good governance structure and security sector reform in South Sudan.

Young and Emerging Leaders Program Graduation: Transformative Leadership for Society

From 26 to 27 January, LéO Africa Institute hosted the graduation seminar at Lake Victoria Serena Resort for the inaugural class of their Young and Emerging Leaders Project (YELP) in cooperation with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. YELP brings together 20 outstanding thought leaders from Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda that have backgrounds in media, social entreprise, the arts, and business.
