Is a national dialogue a solution to South Sudan's quest for Peace?

The idea of a national dialogue in South Sudan has attracted considerable optimism as it has raised pessimism. Some see viable hope in the national dialogue initiative while the opposition reportedly called the move “bogus.” Supporters of the dialogue see it as an opportunity to resuscitate failed peace talks whilst giving chance to all South Sudanese to participate in the process of bargaining for peace. In this keynote address, Yusuf Kiranda explored the prospects of a national dialogue in restoring peace and civility in South Sudan.

Exploring the situation of South Sudan refugees in Uganda

This special synthesis report explores the situation of South Sudan refugees and asylum seekers in Uganda as well the impact of a burgeoning refugee crisis towards Uganda’s ability to cope. The report furthermore highlights critical issues that need to be addressed regarding refugee protection and management including the support Uganda urgently needs. It suggests the need to address pervasive violence by focussing on state building within the great lakes region as the longterm solution to a refuge situation that is potentially exploding beyond existing capacities for response.

Religion, Gender & Women’s Rights

ARISE Magazine, Issue 62

Together with our Partner ACFODE (Action for Development) we published the ARISE Magazine, a Women's Development Magazine. This issue deals with religion, gender & women’s rights.

Religion continues to play a significant role in shaping perceptions about women and their roles in some religious groupings. However, women have emerged to challenge certain stereotypes and reshape the thinking while challenging the exclusion of fellow women from some roles. Our partner ACFODE attempts to amplify the role of religion in championing women's rights.

Refugees Welcome?

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung mourns the loss of Helmut Kohl

On the death of former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, Chairman of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and former President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering, writes:

A Resource for Civic Education in Uganda

Civic Education is often a forgotten aspect that is very central in the democracy equation. Rallying citizens to become interested in the affairs of their country not just during elections but prior, during and after elections will enhance their involvement in what their leaders do for their communities. This democracy workbook is a resource that can be used by community leaders and key resource persons to talk about different aspects of democracy.
