Youth4Policy Public Dialogue and Launch of the second cohort
On the 21 of March, we held the Youth4Policy public dialogue in Kampala. Together with our partners Centre for Development Alternatives (CDA) and the Public Policy Institute (PPI), we organized the Youth4Policy Programme, a policy capacity training for young professionals. The public dialogue offered a stage for the 8 fellows to present and discuss their policy alternatives and ended with the official launch of the second cohort of Youth4Policy.

“Debate is the foundation for the progress of the world”
Final National University Debate Competition for students from all over Uganda
Together with our partner Action for Development (ACFODE), we held the National University Debate in Kampala from the 6th to the 7th of March. More than 40 students coming from ten different universities in Uganda discussed about various controversial issues such as political representation, feminism, women emancipation, gender neutral language and “women only” spaces.

#DataFestKampala: Using the new oil effectively
“Data is the new oil” – this statement was highlighted quite often during the first DataFest in East Africa, hosted by Pollicy and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) in Kampala from 6th to 7th of March. Twenty speakers educated and discussed with over 200 participants about different aspects of data such as data management, analysis, security and visualization. Stakeholders from NGOs, the private sector and the government came together to increase collaboration and knowledge.

“You represent the youth. You are important.”
Between 27th February and 1st March elected youth leaders met in Kitgum district for a training organized by the National Youth Council (NYC) and Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS). The participants were trained and sensitized about the foundations of their work and discussed their own contribution to regional development.

How can climate-smart technologies be implemented in agriculture?
On 27th February the African Centre for Trade and Development (ACTADE) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) hosted a panel discussion on climate-smart technologies for Uganda’s agricultural sector. Representatives from governmental institutions, the private sector and farmers as well as scientists attended the event and debated intensively on how solutions can be implemented and how new technologies can be accessible and affordable for smallholder farmers.

Intercultural Dialogue for South Sudanese Refugees in the Rhino Refugee Resettlement
On 19th February 2019, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) and the Youth Social Advocacy Team (YSAT,) under the Network of South Sudanese Civil Society Organizations in Uganda (NoSSCOU), hosted an intercultural dialogue at the Rhino Refugee Resettlement in Arua. More than 100 South Sudanese refugee representatives and leaders from all 7 zones of the resettlement actively participated and discussed in the public debate. They reflected their roles and the essential component of culture and national identity in the peace process in South Sudan.

“Access to Information is a human right”
On 18th-20th February 2019, the Hub for Investigative Media (HIM) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) organized a workshop to foster the implementation of the Access to Information Act 2005 and Access to Information Regulations 2011 in Nebbi district. The HIM has been actively engaged in capacity building and advocacy campaigns and is targeting local government officials and sensitizing the public about the law. The project aims to strengthen the leaders’ knowledge and usage of the access to information tools which in turn leads to an improvement in citizen’s access to information and strengthening governance accountability. This should also realize strengthened citizens’ engagement in promoting government accountability.

Development, Refugees and Human Rights Abuses - extensive debates at International Law Fellowship 2019
On 15th February the Konrad-Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) and the University Forum on Governance (UNiFOG) hosted the International Law Fellowship 2019 at Makerere University in Kampala. The event brought law students and experts from Uganda, South Sudan and Sierra Leone together. They were involved in panel discussions on current issues of international law and rule of law in the context of Uganda and Africa.

Kick-off for the second cohort of the Media Challenge Fellowship 2019
The second cohort of young and emerging journalists started the Media Challenge Fellowship Programme on 5th-10th February 2019. Organized by the Media Challenge Initiative in partnership with DW Academy and KAS, 26 students from 12 universities in Uganda undergo an intensive 6-month multimedia journalism training. The first week of the Programme included practical trainings in online, radio and television combined with discussions and talks with professionals from different media sectors.

Kampala Students debate on Gender and Youth Empowerment
From 13th to 14th the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) hosted this year’s Regional Debate Competition in Kampala in cooperation with Action For Development (ACFODE). Together participants, judges and organizers created an effective forum for young people to engage in discussions on gender, democracy, good governance and youth participation. 32 students of Makerere University, Kyambogo University, Uganda Christian University and Kampala International University participated.
