Youth4Policy Migration Fellowship

Introduction to Migration and Forced Displacement.

Youth4Policy is an initiative of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung aimed at empowering the next generation of policy experts to meaningfully contribute to policy analysis and public debates. Youth4Policy serves as a capacity development lab for youth leaders from a diverse spectrum of backgrounds such as academia, civil society, and public service with a motivation to research and analyze specific policy questions from a youth perspective. Particularly for the next five years, the fellowship program shall attract young researchers who are interested to study and explore pertinent policy questions around migration and forced displacement issues in Uganda and South Sudan.

An Innovation Fireplace that brought together Ugandan startups and German politicians

Ugandan Startup Ecosystem

On 14th of June, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), together with Media Challenge Initiative (MCI), hosted the Innovation Fireplace: A Panel discussion and exhibition of the Ugandan Startup Ecosystem at MCI Media Hub. More than 30 startup innovators met with a delegation of German Members of Parliament to discuss startup investment, political economy, ease of doing business and to showcase their innovations. The discussion focused on the prospects of Uganda's younger generation for investment and innovation to promote entrepreneurship and employment. Afterwards, the German delegates visited the various exhibition booths and talked to leading young innovators.

Interactive Exhibition

Games and Politics is a touring exhibition by Goethe Institut that has been travelling around the globe, last stop was Addis Ababa in Ethopia. This year’s edition is being hosted in Kampala (March - May) in collaboration with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Uganda and South Sudan and the Design Hub Kampala. It is based on the exhibition Global Games by the ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medien) in Karlsruhe, Germany, and focuses explicitly on political games created since 2004.

Young Leaders Think Tank receives training on producing effective policy recommendations

The Young Leaders Think Tank for Policy Alternatives is an initiative of KAS to enhance youth participation in governance and policy formulation in Uganda. The 25 members are young, highly qualified Ugandans engaged in different sectors and meet regularly to discuss important policy issues and develop policy papers (the last one on Agriculture was even presented to the Vice-Minister of Uganda). Therefore, developing skills to write well-structured and relevant policy briefs and blog posts was the goal of the two-day-workshop from 3rd to 4th September at Esella Country Hotel in Kampala.

Policy Recommendations on how to enhance youth participation in Ugandan agriculture

KAS is collaborating with young innovators in Uganda to generate new policy ideas on issues that affect the young people in Uganda. On 25th August, the Young Leaders Think Tank for Policy Alternatives has presented a paper that offers critical reflections on youth engagement in the agricultural sector to the Vice President of Uganda, Mr. Edward Ssekandi.

SYMPOSIUM ON THE POSSIBILITIES OF PEACE AND POLITICAL STABILITY IN SOUTH SUDAN

Alternatives for Fostering Inclusive State Building and Sustainable Peace

To create a platform for dialogue on the current situation in South Sudan, KAS together with Makerere University Convocation and the University Forum on Governance organized a public dialogue and academic roundtable to discuss the prospects for peace and political stability in South Sudan. With the theme: “Transcending the Shadow of Violence: Alternatives for Fostering Inclusive State Building and Sustainable Peace in South Sudan” the events aimed to provide a platform where experts on violence, state building and peace will reflect on prevailing circumstances in Sudan.

SOCIAL MEDIA FOR IMPROVED LOCAL GOVERNANCE AND SERVICE DELIVERY IN WEST NILE REGION

Promoting Good governance, Accountability and Civic engagement at the local government level through social Media

For the third time in 2016, we have once again partnered with the Center for Media Literacy and Community Development (CEMCOD) to train 20 local government leaders in the West Nile Region (Arua, Moyo, Yumbe, Nebbi and Koboko) on the effective use of media, with special emphasis on social media platforms in improving good governance, transparency and accountability in the management of public affairs, citizen engagement and delivery of social services.

The Role of Appointed and Elected Leaders in Promoting Good Governance in a Multiparty-System at the District Level

Promoting responsible citizenship, pluralism and cooperation regardless of political affiliation

The Directorate of National Guidance (DNG)in partnership with KAS trained 35 local government leaders from Tororo, Busia and Butajela on effectively collaborating in a multiparty-system at local level, with special emphasis on responsible citizenship, civic education and citizen engagement to guarantee efficient service delivery. Aware of the fact that multipartyism is still relatively new in Uganda, the concept lacks appreciation, especially at the local level – leaders therefore need to be oriented towards the key tenets of democracy and pluralism

2016 UGANDA SOCIAL MEDIA CONFERENCE REPORT

In order to provide further opportunities for a systematic reflection on crucial issues related to social mediawith key experts and stakeholders, KAS hosted the second annual Social Media Conference on 19th July2016. The theme for this year’s conference was “How is social media transforming Uganda’s political and sociallandscape?” The conference brought together key stakeholders from academia, government, civil society and the mediato have a constructive exchange on the opportunities and challenges of the growing social media.

On Sunday, the 07th August 2016 at 10:00AM, most residents of Acholi and parts of Lango sub-region shall tune to 102 Mega FM listen to KABAKE. To many of them, this will not be their first time to listen to the programme but rather their 670th. Kabake, an Acholi word which literally means to “to gather and dialogue” is a community radio programme supported by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, a German political foundation.
