Youth4Policy Migration Fellowship

Introduction to Migration and Forced Displacement.

Youth4Policy is an initiative of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung aimed at empowering the next generation of policy experts to meaningfully contribute to policy analysis and public debates. Youth4Policy serves as a capacity development lab for youth leaders from a diverse spectrum of backgrounds such as academia, civil society, and public service with a motivation to research and analyze specific policy questions from a youth perspective. Particularly for the next five years, the fellowship program shall attract young researchers who are interested to study and explore pertinent policy questions around migration and forced displacement issues in Uganda and South Sudan.

An Innovation Fireplace that brought together Ugandan startups and German politicians

Ugandan Startup Ecosystem

On 14th of June, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), together with Media Challenge Initiative (MCI), hosted the Innovation Fireplace: A Panel discussion and exhibition of the Ugandan Startup Ecosystem at MCI Media Hub. More than 30 startup innovators met with a delegation of German Members of Parliament to discuss startup investment, political economy, ease of doing business and to showcase their innovations. The discussion focused on the prospects of Uganda's younger generation for investment and innovation to promote entrepreneurship and employment. Afterwards, the German delegates visited the various exhibition booths and talked to leading young innovators.

Interactive Exhibition

Games and Politics is a touring exhibition by Goethe Institut that has been travelling around the globe, last stop was Addis Ababa in Ethopia. This year’s edition is being hosted in Kampala (March - May) in collaboration with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Uganda and South Sudan and the Design Hub Kampala. It is based on the exhibition Global Games by the ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medien) in Karlsruhe, Germany, and focuses explicitly on political games created since 2004.

A NEW PLATFORM FOR YOUNG AND EMERGING LEADERS IN UGANDA

What inspires servant leadership? As a political foundation, we are always in a relentless pursuit to not only find the answers to this question but always provide a platform for taking action. After successfully developing various civic education materials, Members of GAIN Uganda met in Kampala for a trainer of trainer’s workshop to equip member organisations with necessary training skills since they were to train the grassroots population in their respective districts. Governance Accountability CSO Network (GAIN-Uganda) was born out of an EU funded project that aimed at promoting accountability and democratic governance in Uganda in 11 districts which include Masaka, Kiboga, Mbarara, Kabale, Kisoro, Arua, Pader, Lira, Soroti, Pallisa and Jinja across the different regions in Uganda

South Sudan remains engulfed in anarchy, suspense and a bleak future. President Salva Kiir remains in Juba controlling a state whose fragility manifests every passing day, his own grip on power visibly shaken. Riek Machar, the ousted Vice President is out in the wilderness and continues to hit war drums, vowing to, with the SPLA/M fight on and snake his way back to Juba. At the height of this, reports of profiteering from the war, illicit acquisition of wealth and arms trade by senior political and military officials continue to make rounds.

On the 5th November, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the initiative "Young Leaders Think Tank for Policy Alternatives" (Think Tank) took stock of 2016 as well as planned for 2017 in order to increase the Think tank’s productivity and relevance. Since 2001, the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation continues to offer scholarships to students in the various fields related to democracy in partnership with the Uganda Martyr's University, Nkozi. On 14th of October the annual KAS scholarship and Alumni holder meeting took place in Kampala. The programme supports the studies in Democracy & Development, Governance & Human Rights as well as the newly introduced Research & Public Policy offered at undergraduate and post graduate levels.

YOUNG FEMALE LEADERS RECEIVE WORKSHOP ON CAPACITY BUILDING IN IGANGA

In Corporation with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, 23 elected Secretaries for Female Youth Affairs of the National Youth Council (NYC) met from 4th until 6th of October at Continental Hotel in Iganga. The meeting not only created a platform for the participants to share challenges that they face and the solutions they have come up with but also gave them the opportunity to strengthen their problem solving and leadership skills they have used in the past few months that they have been in youth leadership.

Beyond elections: fostering and sustaining constructive youth political engagement

On 04th October, a roundtable discussion on constructive youth political engagement was held by the Konrad-Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Uganda and the University Forum on Governance (UNIFOG). Under the theme “Beyond elections: fostering and sustaining constructive youth political engagement” the roundtable brought together distinguished youth from the academia, political parties, civil society and government. UNIFOG and KAS representatives, including special guest Miriam Fischer, Desk Officer of KAS Headquarters in Berlin too were present to discuss prospects for youth mobilization in Uganda.

Harnessing Youth Energies in Promoting Gender Equality and Good Governance

ACFODE and KAS continue to encourage youth participation in the governance of their country. Between 4th and 6th October, KAS supported the annual Inter institutional debate competitions held at Nob View Hotel. This year's theme was harnessing youth energies in promoting gender equality good governance. Makerere University was crowned the champions for 2016.
