Youth4Policy Migration Fellowship

Introduction to Migration and Forced Displacement.

Youth4Policy is an initiative of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung aimed at empowering the next generation of policy experts to meaningfully contribute to policy analysis and public debates. Youth4Policy serves as a capacity development lab for youth leaders from a diverse spectrum of backgrounds such as academia, civil society, and public service with a motivation to research and analyze specific policy questions from a youth perspective. Particularly for the next five years, the fellowship program shall attract young researchers who are interested to study and explore pertinent policy questions around migration and forced displacement issues in Uganda and South Sudan.

An Innovation Fireplace that brought together Ugandan startups and German politicians

Ugandan Startup Ecosystem

On 14th of June, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), together with Media Challenge Initiative (MCI), hosted the Innovation Fireplace: A Panel discussion and exhibition of the Ugandan Startup Ecosystem at MCI Media Hub. More than 30 startup innovators met with a delegation of German Members of Parliament to discuss startup investment, political economy, ease of doing business and to showcase their innovations. The discussion focused on the prospects of Uganda's younger generation for investment and innovation to promote entrepreneurship and employment. Afterwards, the German delegates visited the various exhibition booths and talked to leading young innovators.

Interactive Exhibition

Games and Politics is a touring exhibition by Goethe Institut that has been travelling around the globe, last stop was Addis Ababa in Ethopia. This year’s edition is being hosted in Kampala (March - May) in collaboration with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Uganda and South Sudan and the Design Hub Kampala. It is based on the exhibition Global Games by the ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medien) in Karlsruhe, Germany, and focuses explicitly on political games created since 2004.

CO-OPERATION FOR POLITICAL ENGAGEMENT

Fostering Constructive Youth Political Engagement through Organisations

Together with our partner, the University Forum on Governance (UNIFOG), we held a public debate at the Civil Service College in Jinja to discuss mechanisms for enforcing effective and meaningful cooperation among youth groups and organizations. The debate which attracted 120 participants, mostly students and young leaders from Busoga University and the Jinja Branch of Makerere University offered an exciting learning and dialogue platform on topical issues related to political and organizational development.

Interparty Youth Statement denouncing violence during the 2016 General Elections

Do young people have a voice in determining the peacefulness or violent tendencies of electoral democracy? Together with our partner, the Interparty Youth Platform (IYOP), we have been working tirelessly to ensure peaceful electoral processes in the buildup to the 2016 general elections. As such, we started a series of initiatives with the youth political wings of the various political parties in Uganda. The first initiative was holding a workshop to discuss the broad analytical and conceptual framework of electoral violence in the context of Africa.

KAS launch of reality check on social media and new year reception

On 22 January 2016, KAS Uganda and South Sudan invited its partners and friends to a festive launch of the eight edition of the successful publication series Reality Check. The collection of articles focuses on "Assessing the Impact of Social Media on Political Communication and Civic Engagement in Uganda". At the same time, the launch was KAS' new year reception and provided ample space for conversations and networking.

South Sudan Journalists urged to be patient with the fragile state in the world’s newest capital

Workshop for Journalists in Juba

KAS in partnership with the Association for Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS) successfully held a four day training for journalists in South Sudan from 23 to 27 November 2015. Focusing on the role of the media in nation building and the promotion of sustainable peace in the world’s newest state, the media practitioners were skeptical about the government’s commitment to protect and promote the media in South Sudan. They called on their government to assure them of protection and also demonstrate to the media fraternity that they are a relevant player in the rebuilding of their country.

After an expert round table discussion in the morning of 19 November 2015, Hon. Betty Bigombe, Senior Director for Violence, Conflict and Fragility at the World Bank, held a public lecture on perspectives for sustainable peace and development in South Sudan at Makerere University. The University Forum on Governance (UNIFOG) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) invited students from Makerere University to the public lecture which was followed by a panel discussion.

Round Table Discussion with Experts on Sustainable Peace and Development in the World’s Newest State

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) invited experts from Uganda and South Sudan to discuss challenges and possibilities of the recent peace agreement in South Sudan. To find ways of a more effective work for KAS in South Sudan, the round table discussion contributed to identify promising areas for KAS to engage in a peaceful and democratic development in South Sudan. KAS was very glad to receive Hon. Betty Bigombe, Senior Director for Fragility, Conflict and Violence at the World Bank, as chief guest to give her input on the progress in South Sudan.

The one and a half day follow up workshop organized by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) in cooperation with the Governance and Accountability Inter-District CSO Network Uganda (GAIN-Uganda) was implemented to monitor the outcomes of a previous workshop, which had been taken place from 3 to 4 November 2015.
