Youth4Policy Migration Fellowship

Introduction to Migration and Forced Displacement.

Youth4Policy is an initiative of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung aimed at empowering the next generation of policy experts to meaningfully contribute to policy analysis and public debates. Youth4Policy serves as a capacity development lab for youth leaders from a diverse spectrum of backgrounds such as academia, civil society, and public service with a motivation to research and analyze specific policy questions from a youth perspective. Particularly for the next five years, the fellowship program shall attract young researchers who are interested to study and explore pertinent policy questions around migration and forced displacement issues in Uganda and South Sudan.

An Innovation Fireplace that brought together Ugandan startups and German politicians

Ugandan Startup Ecosystem

On 14th of June, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), together with Media Challenge Initiative (MCI), hosted the Innovation Fireplace: A Panel discussion and exhibition of the Ugandan Startup Ecosystem at MCI Media Hub. More than 30 startup innovators met with a delegation of German Members of Parliament to discuss startup investment, political economy, ease of doing business and to showcase their innovations. The discussion focused on the prospects of Uganda's younger generation for investment and innovation to promote entrepreneurship and employment. Afterwards, the German delegates visited the various exhibition booths and talked to leading young innovators.

Interactive Exhibition

Games and Politics is a touring exhibition by Goethe Institut that has been travelling around the globe, last stop was Addis Ababa in Ethopia. This year’s edition is being hosted in Kampala (March - May) in collaboration with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Uganda and South Sudan and the Design Hub Kampala. It is based on the exhibition Global Games by the ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medien) in Karlsruhe, Germany, and focuses explicitly on political games created since 2004.

Public Dialogue on the Role of State Institutions in a Democracy

A panel of high ranking experts from politics and the academia have underscored the importance of strong and clearly mandated state institutions to democratic development. They, however, noted that such institutions are presently lacking in Uganda. This was a consensus reached at the KAS supported dialogue organised by Makerere University Convocation (MUC), February 12, 2013.

The KAS-supported „Young Leaders Think Tank for Policy Alternatives“ has presented policy recommendations to improve the Ugandan education system. In a public dialogue at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala, the members of the Think Tank discussed their analysis of the problems in the education sector and their recommendations with experts and the interested public.

Experts Discuss Economic Opportunities and Social Benefits of Oil Revenues

High Level Conference “Oil Production in a Social Market Economy – Perspectives for Uganda”

In a high level conference organised by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in conjunction with the Uganda National Chamber for Commerce and Industry a range of outstanding experts presented their views on the topic of oil production in Uganda. The main focus of the discussion was on the question how the expected oil revenues can be managed in a meaningful way in order to ensure a sustainable and socially balanced economic development. The presentations and discussions generated a number of concrete recommendations – among them the establishment of a sovereign oil fund for the Ugandan people.

Democracy Torch and Exhibition Received in Jinja

In a momentous event, the Democracy Torch was received in Jinja District on 17th August 2012 as part of a campaign to draw attention of the local population to issues of democratic governance and accountability. The initiative is a component under the project “Action for Strengthening Good Governance and Accountability” which KAS and ACFODE are implementing in 11 districts with support from the European Union.

Chief Justice launches Democracy Torch and Democracy Exhibition

KAS and ACFODE achieve another milestone in EU-supported project

In a solemn function, Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki has launched the Democracy Torch. It is part of a campaign to increase awareness on democratic principles among the Ugandan people and to remind political leaders of their commitment to democratic values. The campaign is part of the project "Action for Strengthening Democratic Governance and Accountability" which KAS is implementing together with the local partner ACFODE with support from the EU. The torch will be taken to the 11 target districts of the project together with a Democracy Exhibition which was presented at the same event.

Next round of the EU-supported Project “Strengthening Good Governance and Accountability” successfully completed

As part of the EU-supported project “Strengthening Good Governance and Accountability“ three review workshop for civil society actors were held last week in Lira, Soroti and Mbarara.

ACFODE – KAS Regional Review Workshop for Central and Western Uganda

Civil Society actors from the Central and Western region who were previously trained as grassroots civic educators under the project, “Action for Strengthening Good Governance and Accountability in Uganda” converged at Lake View Hotel, Mbarara between 10th-12th June 2012 to participate in a three day review workshop of the grassroots training activities they had participated in. The newly trained civic educators hailed from the districts of Kisoro, Kabale and Mbarara in the Western region and Kiboga as well as Masaka in the central region.

Press Freedom in Uganda Shrinking

Public Dialogue on Occasion of the International Press Freedom Day

Negative interference by the state, economic pressure and self-censorship are the main threats that cause press freedom to shrink in Uganda. This is according to media practitioners who convened on the International Press Freedom Day on 3rd May 2012 in order to discuss current challenges fort he media in Uganda. The public dialogue was organised by the Uganda Media Development Foundation (UMDF) with support from KAS.
