Refugees – social burden or economic opportunity?

As the third largest refugee-hosting country in the world, Uganda has a much-praised 'open door' policy for those fleeing conflict and persecution. The implications of this policy and the economic impact of refugees in the country was at the center of the #OpenDoorsUG public dialogue, which included a panel discussion and a variety of Ubuntu Talks.

Youth encouraged to embrace dialogue as JEEMA retains IYOP Football Championship

The 11th of November was an activity packed day at KCCA FC grounds as youth from eight political parties participated in an interparty youth league football tournament. The tournament started with a public dialogue on the theme “Youth as key stakeholders in peace building and development”. The annual tournament aims at promoting a spirit of peaceful co-existence and reducing violent political participation which is common among the youth. It was organised in partnership with Interparty Youth Platform and the International Republican Institute (IRI).

GOVERNANCE UNDERLINED AS UGANDA’S MAIN CHALLENGE TO CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION, ADAPTATION AND RESILIENCE

An experts’ roundtable by UNIFOG addressed Uganda’s climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience strategy. Participants noted that several climate change response policies and actions are underway. However, governance gaps in the form of limited capacities, poor coordination, and corruption present major challenges.

While youth constitute a significant percentage of Uganda’s population, their participation in national governance and policy discussions continues to be very low. The Northern Region Youth Debate hosted at Gulu University on the 22nd of September 2017 revisited the debate on youth participation within political parties in Uganda. It was organised in partnership with the University Forum on Governance (UNIFOG).
