Democracy and Civic Engagement in the New Age of Civic Engagement
On June 28, the fourth edition of Uganda’s largest Social Media Conference was convened at Mackinnon Suites. 400 guests, speakers and exhibitors gathered to take part in a discourse on digital (dis) information and its impact on democratic processes. This year, a new multifaceted format was adopted with three parallel workshop sessions which were followed by insightful speeches, panel discussions and various debates.

Social media channels have become more common as sources of information to the public.We only need access to internet and our smart phones to access a lot of information. But wealso see unregulated journalism strongly growing alongside the tradition media houses. Thisdevelopment poses many questions like: - How can we trust the sources of all thisinformation? What does it mean with regards to the aspects of objectivity? What happens tothe aspects of filtering and conceptualisation? And whether this development undermines thetraditional media houses?

2016 UGANDA SOCIAL MEDIA CONFERENCE REPORT
In order to provide further opportunities for a systematic reflection on crucial issues related to social mediawith key experts and stakeholders, KAS hosted the second annual Social Media Conference on 19th July2016. The theme for this year’s conference was “How is social media transforming Uganda’s political and sociallandscape?” The conference brought together key stakeholders from academia, government, civil society and the mediato have a constructive exchange on the opportunities and challenges of the growing social media.
