Details

Each year select participants from the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and the American Jewish Committee visit Washington, Miami, and Berlin to foster the transatlantic exchange of ideas, policy, and faith. The current trade negotiations over TTIP, between the United States and the European Union, have been critically examined in Germany. The negotiations have been praised by some, and denounced by others. In an effort to continue this debate, trade expert Charles Ludolph will discuss the state of negotiations and points of contention, while highlight the evolved nature of TTIP.

The second discussion of the morning will shift to the recently passed USA Freedom Act. Mr. Barton Forsyth, chief of staff to Congressmen Jim Sensenbrenner, played a leading role in the creation of this legislation, which amended controversial aspects of the Patriot Act. In Germany, the revelations about the NSA’s activities were not taken lightly, and have sparked a national discourse on intelligence collection in both nations. The insight into the reforms taken by the U.S. Congress will foster a better understanding of the state of intelligence collection in the U.S. today.
