In this online event, KAS and the Medill School of Journalism will showcase innovation in local news by highlighting four case studies of successful journalistic enterprises.

• The merger of Chicago Public Media and the newspaper Chicago Sun-Times caught the attention of media observers. The deal is taking the for-profit newspaper nonprofit and creating the largest nonprofit local newsroom in America.
• In neighboring Michigan, Detroit-based Outlier Media is an example of a public service organization with community minded journalists. This digital news start-up is financed with grants and sponsorships.

• The Richland Source is an online community news organization in North Central Ohio with an innovative financing model that enables the organization to deliver local news free to their readers.
• The Pilot is a legacy newspaper in North Carolina which has successfully diversified into other media businesses.
