Hermann Gröhe, Vice Chairman of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group, former Federal Minister of Health and Vice Chairman of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung visited Washington, DC on the occasion of the World Health Summit Regional Meeting. He was accompanied by fellow Bundestag Member Dr. Georg Kippels, Member of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development, the Health Committee, and the Subcommittee on Global Health.

Dimensions of the Transatlantic Economy, Innovation in Higher Education and Multilateral Cooperation

Visiting program in Boston, New York and Washington, DC with Professor Dr. Jürgen Rüttgers

Prof. Dr. Jürgen Rüttgers, former federal minister and former minister president of North Rhine-Westfalia, visited the United States from February 10th to the 17th. He met with experts from academic institutions and research organizations to take an in-depth look at US education and innovation. Rüttgers, a board member of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, held talks with business representatives, high-level political stakeholders and think tank experts about the transatlantic relationship in the light of the war in Ukraine and the state of the economy. Representatives of the United Nations, IOE and ILO discussed with Dr. Rüttgers current challenges and future opportunities to drive the dialogue on both sides of the Atlantic for multilateral cooperation.

Die Europäische Union scheint in einer schwierigen Lage zu sein: das Wiederaufkeimen von wirtschaftlichem Nationalismus unter den Mitgliedsstaaten lähmt den Lissabon-Prozess und hat zum Scheitern der Doha-Welthandelsrunde mitbeigetragen. Auch sind die Politiker in Brüssel durch die Ablehnung einer gemeinsamen europäischen Verfassung durch Referenden in Frankreich und den Niederlanden gelähmt und der Integrationsprozess scheint vorerst gestoppt zu sein. John Gillingham argumentiert, dass alle Versuche einer Wiederbelebung des europäischen Gedankens aus Brüssel scheitern werden. Vielmehr müsse die EU sich an den liberalen Wirtschaftsreformen der ehemaligen Sowjetrepubliken in Osteuropa orientieren.

30 Jahre nach der Wiedereinführung der Todesstrafe in den USA durch die Entscheidung des Obersten Gerichtshofes im Fall Gregg gegen Georgia spaltet die Debatte, ob die Todesstrafe abgeschafft, reformiert oder beibehalten werden sollte, weiterhin Amerikas Justiz, Politik und Öffentlichkeit. Das Urteil des Obersten Gerichtshofes (Kansas gegen Marsh), das mit einer knappen 5 zu 4 Entscheidung die Todesstrafe in Kansas bestätigt hat, ist nur das jüngste Beispiel dieser Spaltung.

Guillermo Yeatts, Autor des Buches „The Roots of Poverty in Latin America“ stellte die Frage nach den Gründen für die Armut in Lateinamerika. Dazu nannte er zunächst die folgenden Wahlen: Während das Durchschnittseinkommen in den USA bei rund 32.000 US-Dollar liege, betrage es in Lateinamerika gerade einmal 3.500 US-Dollar. 1980 hätten 35% der Menschen in Lateinamerika unterhalb der Armutsgrenze gelebt, 1999 seien es bereits 44% gewesen und 2003 bereits 47%.
