Flyer Covid-19 attack on democracy

The pandemic is an imposition and a challenge not only for the health systems and economies of the countries of the world, but also for democracy. All over the world, fundamental rights and freedoms are being curtailed in order to contain the pandemic. Many, if not most people accept these cuts because they are aimed to save health and lives. However, such severe interference in democratic rights also require democratic legitimation by parliaments and all decisions must be made in a transparent way and for a limited period of time. However, this is not the case everywhere.

During our digital debate we want to discuss the following questions:

• What is the virus doing to democracy? how are fundamental rights and freedoms respected?
• What role do government, parliament and parties play? how does the political debate take place in view of the restrictions on mobility? how can governments ensure that mobility tracing apps that will be in place post confinement respect individual freedom
