To reflect upon our history and talk about recent events, the Konrad-Adenauer Stiftung and the DAZ invite you to a movie night at the Renitenztheater Stuttgart. We will show Steven Spielberg’s “Bridge of Spies,” starring Tom Hanks. The film tells the story of how the spy pilot Gary Powers, who was shot down over the USSR on May 1, 1960, became the first “object of exchange” in the Cold War, only to be swapped for the top KGB spy Rudolf Abel on February 10, 1962, at the Glienicke Bridge. Gary Powers Jr, son of the pilot and content advisor during the making of the film, will be present at the screening live in Stuttgart on May 2.
After the screening, in a talk moderated by Prof. Dr. Georg Schild (University of Tübingen), we will talk to Gary Powers Jr. about how he experienced his father and details of the incidents portrayed in the movie. What can we learn from the relationship between the superpowers in the Cold War for the future security structure of a suddenly much more insecure world?
Please note that entrance is free, yet we kindly ask for registration via the button on the right side of this site. We will screen the movie in English language with German subtitles, the talk with Gary Powers Jr will take place in English as well.
