John Mahama und der NDC gehen als klare Sieger aus den Präsidentschafts- und Parlamentswahlen 2024 hervor

Noch bevor die Stimmauszählung abgeschlossen war, trat der Präsidentschaftskandidat der New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia, am Sonntagmorgen im Rahmen einer Pressekonferenz vor die Mikrofone und verkündete offiziell seine Niederlage. Die NPP hat mit 41,61% der Stimmen nicht nur das Rennen um die Präsidentschaft eindeutig verloren, sondern ist auch bei den Parlamentswahlen drastisch hinter dem National Democratic Congress (NDC) zurückgeblieben. Viele Wahlkreise, welche die NPP 2020 noch eindeutig für sich entscheiden konnten, gingen in diesem Jahr an den NDC.

Pour le gouvernement minoritaire de Justin Trudeau, qui a failli perdre sa place, les nouvelles opportunités sont apparues – du moins à court terme-, pour pouvoir démontrer sa capacité à agir en période difficile. A quelques semaines de prendre la présidence du G7, la campagne électorale au Canada est déjà entamée. Le parti conservateur, mené par Pierre Poilievre, continue de mener la compétition de façon décisive dans tous les sondages.

Voices from Tanzania

This publication compiles all KAS research intern reports from 2021 to 2024, accompanied by a foreword from the KAS representative.

We are proud to present "Voices from Tanzania," a collection of research reports exploring various socio-political and economic aspects of Tanzania. This compilation highlights the work of KAS’s German student researchers, who conducted their independent research during a three-month posting to our Tanzania office from 2021 to 2024. Supported by KAS partners and networks, these reports examine key topics such as the philosophy of Ujamaa, the Standard Gauge Railway’s geopolitical significance, the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and innovative approaches like using sports for peace and social cohesion. While the research offers a German perspective, it serves as an invitation to engage in deeper dialogue about Tanzania's development and its global interactions. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the contributors and partners who made this publication possible, especially the German students: Meike Krieger, Jan-Ole Voss, Daniel Fabian, Sabrina Carl, Emily Samira Axmann, Hannah Bösl, Alexis Gregoire, Ronja Koch, and Tarun Ruschmeier. Tanzania has experienced over three decades of multi-party democracy since its formal reinstatement in 1992. Despite this, the foundation and pillars of its democratic systems remain weak, with progress alarmingly slow. Stakeholders have repeatedly called for a comprehensive overhaul of the country's legal frameworks to better accommodate and promote democratic principles and institutions. Unfortunately, these persistent recommendations have yet to yield meaningful reforms. To address these challenges effectively with the support of KAS Tanzania, Rev. Fr. Dr. Charles H. Kitima (PhD) and Mr. Uzima Justin have authored two insightful books. These works provide an in-depth analysis of the issues undermining Tanzania's democratic structures and offer practical recommendations for fostering a more robust and inclusive democratic framework.

Rumänien kämpft an zwei Fronten um die Demokratie. Einmal gegen Russlands hybriden Angriff auf die Integrität der Präsidentenwahlen. Und dann an der altbekannten Front gegen das System aus Klientelismus und Korruption, das von Kräften getragen wird, die nach wie vor die Macht der früheren kommunistischen Elite verlängern. Es hilft nicht, das eine Problem zugunsten des anderen zu ignorieren. Rumänien braucht ein grundlegend anderes Verhältnis zwischen seinen Institutionen, Politikern und Bürgern, wenn es eine starke und wehrhafte Demokratie werden will.

Se presenta información histórica y cuantitativa sobre la diáspora en Yucatán, principalmente en Mérida, y destaca por su acercamiento al documento humano, a la migración vista y vivida por aquellos que han tomado la decisión de abandonar sus lugares de origen para radicar en Mérida.

Urban Resilience and Local Governance

"An In-Depth Exploration of Five Core Themes Shaping Urban Resilience in Tanzania"

The concept of urban resilience is used as a guiding approach in the publications below. Urban resilience can be defined as a holistic governance approach to tackle and plan for the upcoming multifaceted challenges which city governments are facing in regard to urbanisation in African cities. Resilience can be defined as the ability of a city and its institutional systems to survive, adapt and thrive despite short term shocks and long-term stressors that may destabilize the functioning of a city as well as its people (Resilient Cities Network, 2022). Here, it is especially relevant to plan in a sustainable and holistic approach and not in “silos” as is often the case. Visionary governance is needed, especially in African cities like Dar es Salaam. This series of thought pieces seeks to explore urban resilience in Tanzania’s main urban centres from various perspectives, focusing on ways that urban planning, its related aspects and political stakeholders influence urban resilience. It covers five important thematic areas, namely, politics and planning, informal settlements, food systems planning, urban greening, and community-led urban waste management. ICLEI-Africa is collaborating with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Tanzania to publish this series of thought pieces on urban resilience and local governance in Tanzania.

Politischer Durchbruch beim EU-Mercosur-Handelsabkommen

Gründung eines der größten Wirtschaftsräume der Welt nach 25-Verhandlungsjahren

Nach einem Vierteljahrhundert Verhandlungen gelang es auf dem Mercosur-Gipfel in Montevideo am 6. Dezember überraschend, eine politische Einigung über das EU-Mercosur-Abkommen zu erzielen. In einer Zeit wachsender Abschottungspolitik und steigender Multipolarität ist dieser Durchbruch von zentraler Bedeutung. Durch die Gründung einer der größten Handelsblöcke der Welt schafft die EU, nach 25-Jahren Verhandlungen, Tatsachen und beweist ihre Handlungsfähigkeit. Angesichts der chinesischen Investitionsoffensive in der Region ist dies ein wichtiges geopolitisches Signal. Die EU-Staaten sind jetzt gefordert, das Abkommen schnell zu ratifizieren und mit Leben zu füllen.
