Am 28. Juli finden in Venezuela Präsidentschaftswahlen statt. Das Land mit den größten Erdölreserven der Welt befindet sich seit Jahren in einer wirtschaftlichen und humanitären Krise. Staatspräsident Nicolás Maduro kandidiert für eine dritte Amtszeit in Folge. Der bis vor drei Monaten kaum bekannte ehemalige Diplomat Edmundo González tritt als Kandidat der Demokratischen Einheitsplattform (Plataforma Unitaria Democrática, PUD) - des Mehrheitsblocks innerhalb der Opposition – an. Unterstützt wird seine Kandidatur durch María Corina Machado, Vorsitzende der liberalen Partei Vente Venezuela, die die Vorwahlen der Opposition im Oktober 2023 klar für sich entscheiden konnte. Ihre Kandidatur wurde allerdings nicht zugelassen. Während die Opposition faire Bedingungen für die Wahlen fordert und unter schwierigen Bedingungen an die Wahlurnen zurückkehrt, verlangt die Regierung die Aufhebung internationaler Wirtschafts- und Finanzsanktionen. Seit Anfang Juli werden Verhandlungsansätze wieder aufgegriffen. „Ungewissheit“ ist ein Begriff, der überall zu hören ist. Alles scheint möglich. Die Venezolanische Bischofskonferenz ruft in ihrem Hirtenbrief vom 11. Juli das Wahlvolk zur Beteiligung und die Institutionen zur Verantwortung auf.

EU sanctions against the regime in Minsk

In recent years, the relevance of the topic of sanctions policy towards the regime in Belarus has grown continuously.  The Western community keeps adopting new packages in response to the regime’s political repressions, its participation in Russia’s war on Ukraine and threats to regional security, and there are no signs that sanctions might soon be eased or lifted. This policy brief, compiled by Belarusian experts from various professional fields, aims to provide readers with a wide range of information and analysis on the inner rationale and effects of Western sanctions on regime in Belarus. The paper presents not only the chronology of sanctions but seeks to point out the correlation of goals and results, as well as the effects in different spheres and on separate groups of actors. The goal is to provide decision makers and the interested public with a "big picture" view on the sanctions’ environment, hoping to inform adequate and effective decisions in this field.

VMRO-DPMNE kehrt nach sieben Jahren an die Regierung zurück

Die sozialdemokratisch geführte Regierung als auch der von den Sozialdemokraten unterstützte Staatspräsident Stevo Pendarovski wurden mit einem historisch schlechten Ergebnis abgewählt. Mit der Verfassungsjuristin Gordana Siljanovska Davkova wurde erstmals eine Frau Staatsoberhaupt Nordmazedoniens. Der VMRO-DPMNE-Parteivorsitzende Hristijan Mickoski führt künftig als Premierminister die Regierung des NATO-Landes Nordmazedonien. Die Regierungskoalition besteht neben VMRO-DPMNE aus den vormaligen albanischen Oppositionsparteien und einer Abspaltung der Sozialdemokraten. Der klare Sieg weckt hohe Erwartungen, die vielfältigen Probleme des Landes schnell zu lösen.
