Social Policy in Times of Civil Unrest and Austerity

Lebanon has been suffering of an ever worsening economic crisis for years, mostly affecting the lower income classes. With the country having seen more than three months of nationwide protests, the imminent deadlines relative to the payment of Eurobonds threaten one of the world’s most indebted economies. In partnership with Maison Du Futur (MdF), the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) held an expert workshop entitled “Social Policy in Times of Civil Unrest and Austerity “on the 28th of February 2020.

Comparative workshop: sectarian societies in post-conflict environments

20 international academics and experts met on the 2nd and 3rd December in Beirut in the framework of a comparative workshop that discussed the commonalities and challenges of multi-sectarian societies seeking unity and peace after suffering long periods of conflict experience. The expert roundtable, which was organized jointly with the KAS Office Bosnia-Herzegovina, included Lebanese experts, six participants from Bosnia-Herzegovina and other participants from Iraq and Northern Ireland.

Conference on “democracy in crisis, democracy in change: From popular defiance to citizen participation”

In partnership with the Observatoire de la fonction publique et de la bonne Gouvernance OFP of the Saint-Joseph University in Beirut (USJ) the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) conducted an international conference on the 14th of November, 2019, on the challenge of participative democracy in Europe and Lebanon with the participation of politicians, experts and academics from Europe and Lebanon. The conference took place at the Campus des sciences sociales of the University (Rue Huvelin), in Achrafieh in the presence of more than 100 participants (activists, academics, politicians, journalists and students) from Lebanon and abroad.

Enhancing writing skills of local NGO researchers, public administration employees and analysts

From the 11th – 14th of November, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation hosted with the local research organisation SYNAPS an intensive workshop on writing, editing and communication for 11 non-native local NGO researchers, public administration employees and analysts. The workshop delivered a comprehensive training in producing written work and marketing it for a targeted audience.

The Foreign Policy of Lebanon: Building Neutrality in the 21st Century

On Tuesday, 24.09.2019, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in cooperation with the International Relations Bureau of the Lebanese Kataeb Party organized a conference in the Phoenicia Hotel Beirut entitled “The Foreign Policy of Lebanon: Building Neutrality in the 21st Century”. MP Samy Gemayel, the President of the Kataeb Party, Dr. Malte Gaier, Resident Representative to Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Lebanon, and Mrs. Joelle Bou Abboud, Member of the Political Bureau, opened the conference which continued with two in-depth expert panels.

Resist, Maneuver, or Concede? Three Paths for Iran Facing US Resolve

On Thursday, 12.09.2019, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation organized in cooperation with Maison du Futur a simulation workshop in Bikfaya. The topic of the workshop was "Resist, Maneuver, or Concede? Three Paths for Iran Facing U.S. Resolve" and revolved around three potential scenarios in the context of the tensions between Iran and the USA. The aim of this war-game like simulation was to analyse potential dynamics and triggers of each scenario in order to raise awareness for escalating factors.

Capacity building of CIMIC/LAF in conflict resolution and mediation

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung organized together with Lebanese Association for Mediation and Conciliation (LAMAC) for the 3rd time a conflict resolution and mediation training for 25 officers of various units of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) for 5 days under the patronage of LAF’s Department of Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC ).

Capacity building of CIMIC/LAF in proposal writing and project management

The Konrad Adenauer Foundation organized in cooperation with SMART Center a 5-day workshop on proposal writing skills, from the 29th of August to the 4th of September at CIMIC training premises in Fayyadieh. This training was provided for 25 officers from various units of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) under the patronage of LAF’s Department of Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC ) and it is a follow up training for the Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) after successfully completing a training program during May 2018, which included topics related to Project Planning, Field Operation, Communication, Conflict Resolution and Mediation Skills.

Development of the Lebanese Gas Resources, Opportunities and Challenges

On 7th August 2019, Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) held a roundtable discussion on current developments concerning the Lebanese gas resources in the eastern Mediterranean. Together with numerous experts as well as representatives of foreign embassies, chances and challenges of gas extraction by Lebanon were discussed. The event took place at the Lancaster Plaza Hotel in Raouche. The main focus laid on the presentation of Brigadier General Khaled Hamade's policy paper "Development of the Middle East Gas: Opportunities & Challenges".
