SUMMARY:Public debate Forum
LOCATION:
DESCRIPTION:Youth today are among the most digitally connected groups in society. Social media platforms and AIpowered
tools increasingly influence how information is produced, shared, and consumed. AI-driven
algorithms now shape online content, recommend information, and even generate text, images, and
videos. At the same time, governments around the world are debating how to regulate social media access
for younger users. In Malaysia, policymakers have recently discussed restrictions on social media
access for individuals under the age of 16 as part of broader efforts to address cyberbullying, online
scams, and harmful digital content. Similar discussions are taking place in countries such as Australia
and several European states, highlighting a growing global concern about the impact of digital
platforms on youth. These developments raise important questions: How is AI shaping online spaces? Should
governments regulate social media access for young users? And what role should youth play in
shaping digital governance? This programme aims to provide a platform for youth to engage critically with these questions and
better understand the evolving digital landscape.
