Seminar

Effective Legislation and Oversight of the Security Sector

Security Sector Reform in Nigeria

Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) is cooperating with Nigeria’s House of Representatives’ Committee on Army to organize a two-day seminar/retreat on effective legislation and oversight of Nigeria’s security sector, for the leadership (chairmen and deputies) of all the committees on security in Nigeria’s House of Representatives including committees on National Security and Intelligence, Interior, Defence, Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police.

Details

This retreat aims at bringing together leaders of the various committees on security to have deeper understanding of issues, nature, scope and role of parliamentary committees in making/amending laws, approving appointments/budgets, and carrying out oversight functions of security agencies and Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government that relate to the operations of the various security agencies. It would further enhance the exchange of information and ideas on ongoing initiatives in security sector reform and synchronize with initiatives of the parliament towards strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture including issues of overlapping mandates of security agencies to eliminate interagency rivalry, vetting/monitoring of budgets and ways of optimizing the effectiveness of security agencies through effective cooperation, collaboration and coordination.

Furthermore, the retreat would expand the platform for cross fertilization of ideas on areas of further assistance from KAS’ institutional support and partnerships for promoting interagency collaboration among security agencies, cooperation between security agencies and civilian citizens, and uptake pathways for increased assistance to Nigeria’s security sector reform.

The roundtable is part of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s support to the Security Sector Reform in Nigeria. This program is funded by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany.
