Though incredibly important, democratic governance and processes require more than well-functioning elections, parliaments, an independent judiciary and other oversight institutions. It needs a strong culture of democracy, in particular robust, transparent, internally democratic and accountable political parties. Political parties therefore represent a keystone of democratic governance.

Throughout the Pacific region, political parties vary in structure; many political parties are young and in the process of development. Therefore, to discuss opportunities to support and strengthen political parties in the Pacific, a Pacific Regional Dialogue on Political Parties will be implemented by the UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji, in cooperation with the KAS Regional Programme - Australia and the Pacific.

The Pacific Regional Dialogue on Political Parties aim is to encourage discussion amongst Political Party leaders, Officials from Political Party Commissions and Electoral Management Bodies, Civil Society Organisations and experts working in the field of effective governance.

Participants at the workshop will include representatives from Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, Samoa, Cook Islands, Tonga, Republic of Marshall Islands and Kiribati.
