Southern Africa after the Election Year 2019

In May 2019 the African National Congress (ANC) won another, though this time unconvincing, electoral victory in South Africa. President Ramaphosa has to deal with a difficult political and economic situation after the “State Capture” of the network around former president Jacob Zuma. Ramaphosa’s “New Dawn” pledges of economic growth and anti-corruption have so far not been implemented with the desired effectiveness, not least due to intra-party disputes within the ANC. At the same time, the largest opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), struggles to find a new strategy after internal disputes and the election of a new leadership which raises new questions about the role of opposition parties and coalition building.

The outcome of the meeting will be a regional statement by the Major Groups which will constitute, among other things, recommendations on the UN Secretary General’s Special Summit on Climate Change.

Meeting with Cameroonian traditional Kings: Royal Responsibility for Climate Change

The meeting, which was co-organized by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), took place on the 06 th of June 2017. A couple of topics were addressed, among which the travel experiences of the Cameroonian Kings and Princesses (from April 28 to May 9 in Germany), the Royal Responsibility for Climate Change and the involvement of traditional structures in international cooperation and Germano-Cameroon relations. The meeting was held in the offices of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Yaoundé.

Green Urban Development Prospects in Africa

From 26th to 27th of April a delegation of African parliamentarians and city mayors visited Brussels in occasion of their one-week study tour to Europe, organized by Dr. Oliver Ruppel, Director of the KAS Regional Programme for Sub Saharan Africa. At an evening event, organized by the MNED Brussels, the participants discussed with Jens Gieseke, MEP and Diederick Zambon, Head of the Public Sector Sub-Saharan Africa of the European Investment Bank, on "Green Urban Development Prospects in Africa". This report gives a summary of the respective topics discussed on the event.

Book launch: "Roadmap for Sustainable Biofuels in southern AFrica: Regulatory frameworks for improved development?"

On 3rd May 2017, the Vice Rector Research and Innovation of Stellenbosch University, Prof. Dr. Eugene Cloete launched a newly published book called “Roadmap for Sustainable Biofuels in southern Africa: Regulatory frameworks for improved development?”. The legal and transdisciplinary book was edited by Prof. Dr. Oliver C. Ruppel and Dr. Holger Dix. The book launch was organized by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation’s Regional Programme for Climate Policy and Energy Security for sub-Saharan Africa and held at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS).
