KAF CONTEXTUALISE NEPAD WITH NATIONAL COMMISSION ON CULTURE AND MINISTRY OF REGIONAL COOPERATION AND NEPAD

KUMASI, 9 -12 MAY 2006

The Konrad Adenauer Foundation with its goal of confronting development challenges with the use of indigenous knowledge continues this endeavour by promoting various dimensions and perspectives of indigenous programmes in order to integrate it to the mainstream international development programmes.

In this direction, KAF in 2005 supported the National Commission on Culture to unravel the cultural dimensions of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) by hosting a maiden seminar on NEPAD and Culture. The objective of the seminar was to ensure that cultural issues which are relevant to the realisation of goals of NEPAD are fully addressed.

As a follow up to the implementation of the novelty, three regional zonal workshops were organised across the country in order to bring key stakeholders made up of traditional leaders, academics, media practitioners, development workers, government officials, politicians, civil servants together to brain storm the various cultural elements of NEPAD. At the end of these workshops, it became imperative that, a national workshop be organised to bring representatives from the three zones together to harmonise the ideals expressed in these workshops.

As a final stage of the process, and as a preparation towards a sub-regional programmes on Culture and NEPAD, a national conference is hereby organised from 9th – 12th May 2006 in Kumasi as a follow–up to three zonal workshops with the aim of soliciting views on how to contextualise the content of the NEPAD document, define relevant and pragmatic programmes and activities as well as to facilitate the full participation of all citizens in the implementation of NEPAD programmes.
