Energy security and climate chance worldwide

Over the past few years, energy policy has increasingly become the focus of discussions on climate change. Within those debates, opinions on using energy from fossil fuels and renewable energies differ widely. This publication is the product of numerous contributions from the foreign offices of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. They provide an overview of national perceptions of energy and climate change in the selected countries.

European Energy Supply Security in Light of the Ukraine Crisis

The Ukraine crisis is intensifying the long-standing debate about the security of Europe’s energy supplies. On a geopolitical level, the EU’s energy interests to the east, south, and southeast are gaining salience. The idea of a transatlantic gas supply corridor has recently been proposed - it remains on the drawing board because of costly infrastructure requirements and stiff competition for energy from Asia. Within the EU, the Ukraine crisis is providing further impetus for the shift of political priorities away from climate concerns and towards policies focused on security and competition.

Die Regierung Cameron hat mit einer umfangreichen Kabinettsumbildung de facto die Vorbereitungen zum Wahlkampf 2015 eingeleitet. Wie erwartet wurden mehr Frauen ins Kabinett berufen, unerwartet hingegen der Rücktritt von Außenminister Hague und die Absetzung von Erziehungsminister Gove, bedenklich aber nicht überraschend die Dezimierung von EU-Fürsprechern wie Kenneth Clarke.

UKIP eindeutiger Sieger bei der Wahl zum Europäischen Parlament

Bei den Wahlen zum Europäischen Parlament hat die europakritische und rechtspopulistische UKIP einen klaren Wahlsieg erringen können. Die oppositionelle Labour Partei schnitt schlechter als erwartet ab und landete auf dem zweiten Platz. Knapp dahinter landeten die regierenden Konservativen auf dem dritten Platz. Die auf nationaler Ebene sonst unbedeutenden Grünen konnten mit dem vierten Platz einen Achtungserfolg erringen, während die LibDems als regierender Koalitionspartner ein Desaster erlebten und nur noch einen Europaabgeordneten (von vormals elf) behaupten konnten.

The crisis in the euro area revealed points of weakness in the architecture of the Monetary Union. It appeared that the common monetary policy also required a common system of banking supervision. This report summarises the current proposals and decisions regarding the Banking Union and evaluates the Banking Union’s three pillars – banking supervision, bank resolution and common standards for deposit guarantees – from a regulatory economic perspective.

In 2013, the European Centre for Energy and Resource Security (EUCERS)together with the German National Academy of Science and Engineering(ACATECH) and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) in London hosted aseries of round-table discussions at King’s College London. After the successfulcooperation and organisation of energy talks in 2012 by EUCERS and KAS,the second series - now with partner ACATECH - was to promote innovativeand creative thinking around the issue of energy resilience. This led to thearranging of five probing round-tables on the topic.
