Conflict in Sudan: An Invitation to a Dialogue Session

A KAS-MDC Forum for Intra-Regional Dialogue

Join us for an expert panel discussing the conflict in Sudan. This event, moderated by Sarah Awaidah, brings together Gal Lusky, the founder of Israeli Flying Aid (IFA), Dr. Haim Koren, former director of the Political Planning Division at Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and former Israeli ambassador to Egypt and South Sudan. They will be joined by Mekki El Mograbi press writer on African Affairs and former diplomat in Washington D.C.

The Jewish King of Warsaw: Szczepan Twardoch in conversation with Michal Zamir

An event forming part of the series "On Political Turmoil and Human Destiny" in cooperation with KAS Israel

"King" is the latest book by Polish author Szczepan Twardoch, a crime novel telling the story of Yakub Shapira, a Jewish gangster and professional boxer. The author takes his readers into the underworld of 1930s Warsaw and masterfully sketches the growing antisemitism in Polish society at the time. The conversation between Twardoch and journalist Michal Zamir will focus on the Jewish underworld in Poland, the author's extensive research for his book and his surprising choice of subject for this literary work. This event is part of the special "On Political Turmoil and Human Destiny" series and takes places during the Jerusalem Writers Festival.

Salaam Iran: Golnaz Hashemzadeh Bonde in Conversation with Liraz Charhi

An event forming part of the series "On Political Turmoil and Human Destiny" in cooperation with KAS Israel

Golnaz Hashemzadeh Bonde was born in Iran and fled to Sweden with her parents when she was a child. In her second novel, "What We Owe", she relates the story of Nahid, an Iranian woman fleeing her country in the wake of Khomeini's rise to power. Designated a "masterpiece" by The Times, this book has won multiple literary awards and was translated into 25 languages. The conversation between Hashemzadeh Bonde and Liraz Charhi will centre around refugees and immigration, the longing for the bygone Iran, the current situation in the country as well as the life of the author. This event is part of the special "On Political Turmoil and Human Destiny" series and takes places during the Jerusalem Writers Festival.

The 7th Annual Minerva / ICRC / KAS Conference on International Humanitarian Law

The Minerva Center for Human Rights at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the International Committee of the Red Cross, in cooperation with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, gathered in Jerusalem 24 scholars and practitioners on 4-5 December 2012 to address the complex and increasingly significant topic of the interplay between two distinct legal regimes: the conduct of hostilities regime, derived from International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and the law enforcement regime, derived mainly from human rights law.

Arab Politics in Israel and the 19th Knesset Elections

A Conference on November 27, 2012 at Tel Aviv University

On January 22, 2013, Israel will hold elections for the 19th session of the Knesset, the legislative branch of the Israeli government. The elections follow a period of upheaval in the Arab world beginning with the “Arab Spring” of 2011, which witnessed the rise to power of Islamic groups in Egypt and Tunisia, and a period of socio-economic protest in Israel in the summer of 2011.

Civil society commitment in the field of environmental protection

“Green Cities - Where is the incentive?” was the topic for a roundtable discussion jointly organized by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Israel and the Union for Local Authorities in Israel (ULAI) on November 12, 2012. The event was part of this year’s Israeli-German Sisters Cities Conference “Partner Cities Embraced in Friendship”. Focusing on sustainable urban development, the discussants particularly turned to the meaning of the civil society at the local level.

Neu bedacht: Orientalismus vs. Okzidentalismus

Am 1. November 2012 veranstalte die Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Kooperation mit dem Center for the Study of European Politics and Society an der Ben-Gurion Universität in Be’er Sheva einen Experten-Workshop zum Thema „Neu bedacht: Orientalismus vs. Okzidentalismus“. Wissenschaftler aus Israel, Deutschland und Italien erörterten die Entwicklungen der vergangenen Jahre und untersuchten die Frage, welche Spuren der Arabische Frühling in der Wahrnehmung des „Orients“ hinterlassen hat.

Regionale, transnationale und externe Akteure

Im Rahmen der Experten-Workshopreihe „Die Krise im Nahen Osten: Auswirkungen auf Demokratie, Entwicklung und Sicherheit“, die gemeinsam von der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Israel und dem Insitute for Counterterrorism (ICT) am Interdisciplinary Center Herzlyia (IDC) veranstaltet wurde, fand am 18. Oktober 2012 der zweite Workshop zum Thema „Regionale, transnationale und externe Akteure“ statt.

Gemeinsame palästinensisch-israelische Initiativen für den Frieden

In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Israel / Palestine Center for Research and Information (IPCRI) veranstaltete die KAS Israel am 17. Oktober eine Podiumsdiskussion, die sich mit der Bedeutung gemeinsamer palästinensisch-israelischer Friedensinitiativen auseinandersetzte. Es referierten unter anderem Dr. Gershon Baskin und Hanna Siniora, ehemalige Co-Direktoren von IPCRI, über ihre gemeinsamen Erfahrungen im palästinensisch-israelischen Dialog. Anschließend legten Riman Barakat und Dan Goldenblatt, das neue Leitungsgespann, ihre Vision zum Voranbringen einer Friedenslösung im Nahost-Konflikt dar.

On October 17, 2012, the Israel/Palestine Center for Research and Information (IPCRI) and KAS Israel organised a debate on “Palestinian-Israeli Joint Initiatives for Peace: Past, Present and Future Perspectives”. In his opening remarks, Michael Mertes, director of the KAS’s Israel Office, paid tribute to the longstanding cooperation between IPCRI and KAS.
