Benedikt XVI. ruft zu Frieden und religiöser Koexistenz auf

Vom 14. bis 16. September 2012 besuchte Papst Benedikt XVI. den Libanon. Insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund des anhaltenden Bürgerkrieges in Syrien und den gewaltsamen Protesten muslimischer Extremisten gegen westliche Institutionen in Nordafrika, im Zusammenhang mit dem in den USA veröffentlichten anti-islamischen Video, setze Papst Benedikt XVI. mit seinem Besuch ein Zeichen. Der Besuch endete mit einer öffentlichen Messe am Sonntag den 16. September, an der mehr als 300.000 Menschen verschiedener Religionen teilnahmen.

Der anhaltende Bürgerkrieg in Syrien wirkt sich zunehmend auf die innen- und regionalpolitische Haltung des Haschemitischen Königreiches aus. Während Jordanien lange Zeit versuchte, in der Syrien-Krise eine neutrale Position einzunehmen, zwingen der andauernde Flüchtlingsstrom und zunehmende Spannungen im syrisch-jordanischen Grenzgebiet das Land, sich verstärkt vom Regime Bashar al-Assads zu distanzieren. Die regionale Krise trifft Jordanien zudem in einer innenpolitisch schwierigen Zeit.

Dr. Martin Beck at the Summer School held at the German-Jordanian University

Martin Beck taught a modul on Regional Relations of the Arab World at a Summer School organized by the Freie Universität Berlin at the German-Jordanian University in Amman on September 11, 2011. He lectured and discussed with students from Jordan, Syria, Morocco, Germany, Switzerland and Canada on theoritical tools of International Relations, the history of regional affairs and the Arab Spring and its meaning in general and for Jordan in particular.
