Details

Throughout history, writing has played a key role in civilsation. It evolved from a means of functional communication to one of the most highly regarded and refined art forms, from the Far East to the Middle East and the European world. In efforts to further promote common values and unity in diversity as well as an appreciation for the arts in our multicultural society, the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation (KAF), in association with Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM), will be jointly hosting "Malaysia's 1st Arabic and Chinese Calligraphy Competitions in The Golden Rule".

The Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation is a non-governmental German organisation dedicated to safeguarding and promoting peace, freedom, justice, democracy, the rule of law, respect of human rights and global ethic - a belief strongly supported by the IAMM in its mission to protect and preserve our world heritage and impart knowledge for the people of today and future generations.

The competition theme is based on the Chinese and Islamic versions of The Golden Rule:

TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE TREATED.

The Arabic calligraphy competition is based on The Golden Rule as it appears in the verse "No one of you (really) believes in (Allah and in His religion) until he loves for his brother what he loves for his own self" from Imam Nawawi's collection of Forty Hadith (the traditions of the Prophet (saw)).

The Chinese calligraphy competition, is based on The Golden Rule as it appears in the famous Confucian precept "What you do not wish done to yourself, do not do to others".

The two competitions are open to all Malaysians including Permanent Residents. Participants will be divided into two groups:

Group A will consist of artists between 7 to 18 years of age.

Group B will consist of artists who are 19 years and above.

All entry forms should reach the Education Department, Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM), Jalan Lembah Perdana, 50480 Kuala Lumpur no later than or on 2nd September 2004.

All the art works must be submitted to the above address before or on 2nd October 2004 by 5.00 pm. Winners will be announced through the post by the end of November 2004.
