Details

The Highway Africa Conference is a partnership between Rhodes University (School of Journalism and Media Studies) and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), with the support of several partners – among them the KAS Media Programme - development agencies and sponors. For eleven years the Highway Africa Conference has been an important platform for Africa’s debates on journalism and new media. In 2007 the conference addressed questions related to quality and professionalism in their interface with the deployment and use of technology in the newsroom.

In plenary sessions, panel discussions and roundtables more than 500 delegates and presenters reflected on digital possibilities for the continent and it’s challenges. Broadband infrastructure for Africa: Where are we? Media as institution; Journalism as profession, what does it mean? Also from a gender perspective. Knowledge and information management as well as media monitoring were offered among the themes in ongoing training workshops. Book launches rounded up the wide range of programmes. KAS Media launched the first two draft chapters of a new book of investivative journalism at the conference. It is a collaboration of several partners: IJW (Investigative Journalism Workshop at Witwatersrand University), FAIR (Network for Investigative Journalists in Africa) and CIJ (Centre for Investigative Journalism, UK). Being work in process, interested journalists can give feedback and comments via email and will be updated on the progress per newsletter. The entire production will result in an online version of the book at a later stage, accessable for everyone.
