The United Nation’s quest for a global migration governance

This scenario was drawn – with a twinkle in the eye but probably also with a grain of truth – in the context of a dialogue program for migration experts hosted by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung in New York. This dialogue program took place from May 21st to 24th and marked the beginning of a research project on “Regional Cooperation in Migration Management and Refugee Protection”. Throughout the next twelve months ten experts from all parts of the world will study the status-quo and potentials of regional cooperation in the area of migration-management and refugee protection.

In cooperation with the American Council on Germany (ACG), the KAS New York Office hosted a discussion round with Matthias Meis, Head of Division for Strategic Planning and Management at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) on May 4th 2017. Mr. Meis, who traveled to Washington D.C. and New York as part of a KAS-delegation of German influencers from various professional backgrounds within the public and private sector shared his observations and insights on current challenges in development policy.

On March 17th, 2017 the Model United Nations delegation from Chemnitz University of Technology visited KAS New York. The group of 12 students participates in the simulation “National Model United Nations” that takes place in New York from March 19th to 23rd, 2017.

Breakfast briefing

On March 14th, Member of the German Bundestag Ursula Groden-Kranich, visited the new KAS office in New York for a breakfast briefing. She was in New York to attend the sixty-first session of the Commission on the Status of Women which took place at the United Nations Headquarters from 13 to 24 March 2017. The breakfast briefing, which was co-organized together with the American Council on Germany (ACG) focused on gender equity in a changing work environment. Ms. Groden-Kranich shared her insights on the topic and made clear why it is still necessary to fight the gender gap.

In Anwesenheit des Deutschen Botschafters bei den Vereinten Nationen Dr. Harald Braun, hochrangiger UN-Vertreter, Repräsentanten jüdischer Organisationen in den USA und politischer Think Tanks betonte der stellvertretende Generalsekretär der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Dr. Gerhard Wahlers, die Bedeutung des Standortes New York für die internationale Arbeit der Stiftung.

Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung opened new office in New York

On January 23, the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung opened its New York office in the historic News Building in midtown - with a great view towards the UN headquarters. The opening ceremony was held in presence of Ambassador Professor Harald Braun, Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations, high ranking representatives of the UN, Jewish organizations in the U.S. and political think tanks. Gerhard Wahlers, Deputy Secretary General of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, stressed the great importance of the new location for the international work of the foundation.
