Plateau, a state that lies between the North and South, in what is called the Middle Belt, has witnessed a lot of violent conflicts in its recent history. The major violent conflicts took place in the state capital, which was divided along religious line. Jos North is predominantly Muslim, while other parts belong to “indigenes” who are mostly Christians. The emotions and tension of the coming general elections in 2019 can escalate into violent conflict which will probably be described along religious and ethnic lines. Plateau State was, furthermore, ruled by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from 1999 till 2015, when the All Progressives Congress (APC) unseated the party. The supporters of PDP are all warming up to reclaim the state from APC at all cost, while the incumbent governor is nursing the ambition of a second term, this means the two sides are going extra mile to win the coming elections, and this means violent conflicts may erupt. To avoid the violent conflicts in the election period, KAS and NSCDC are bringing representatives of security agencies together to strategize, and assure the citizens of their level of preparedness and sensitize them on the benefits of violence free elections.
