Details

Cross River State is situated in the South-South geopolitical region of Nigeria with an economy that is dominated by agriculture and tourism. In spite of its large potentials in agricultural development, a large portion of the agricultural sector is still in the informal sector and practice mainly subsistence agriculture. Successive governments in Cross River State have expressed the desire to achieve sustainable development programs that will improve on the lives of the populations by implementing economic growth and transformation programs. Prominent among the focus areas of these programs have been measures aimed at economic growth through industrialization. Due to the inherent social hazards that accompany industrial development, there have been some pockets of measures that aim at providing social succor to the populations. However, it is evident from all these programs that there is not yet a comprehensive policy towards the provision of sustainable social security that targets coverage for a cross section of the populations.

It is within this background that the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung is organizing a one-day round table meeting for critical stakeholders of the social security ecosystem in Cross River State to empower them to effectively position the provision of sustainable social security on the political agenda of the State ahead of the general elections in 2019. The seminar is expected to facilitate the creation of a “Forum of Opinion Leaders/Moulders Advocating the Establishment of a Functional and Sustainable Social Security System” in Cross River State. Participants will include about fifteen critical and influential leaders and multipliers from Political Parties, Business Association, Chamber of Commerce, Emplyers's Associations, Labour Unions, Teachers Associations, Women's Associations, Youth Associations; professional bodies such as Bar Association, Medical Association, Nigeria Union of Journalists; representatives of government agencies, religious and traditional institutions etc.
