Lack of access to stable and affordable energy is a massive roadblock for further economic and social development in South Asia. Integrating local and national energy markets can effectively contribute to increasing energy security throughout the region.

Against this backdrop, the workshop will focus on options for further regional integration of national energy markets to enhance energy security in South Asia.

Among others, the following topics to be discussed:

  • Current developments in local, national and regional energy systems in each of the SAARC member states
  • Lessons to be learnt from other energy market integration processes, i.e. European Union and ASEAN
  • Geostrategic implications of energy security in the SAARC region
  • Political and legal requirements for better connecting local and national energy systems/markets
  • Options for new business models in the production, transmission and distribution of energy
