The core question is, how digital advancement can facilitate the debate on sustainability. Regional Workshop on Emissions' Trading
Emission reductions in the electricity sector will be paramount if the Paris commitments of reducing global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius are to be attained. Emissions trading systems (ETS) as a cost-effective instrument for emissions control are now being implemented or considered across a diverse set of jurisdictions in East Asia. KAS RECAP will hold a two-day workshop in Bangkok to discuss the carbon markets in the subregion.

Fighting Deforestation: New Business Solutions for Increasing Forest Carbon Storage

Deforestation is a worldwide phenomenon and it is depriving millions of people of forest goods and services that are crucial to food security, economic well-being and environmental health. Today with only 0.2 hectares of forest per person, the Asia-Pacific region is, per capita, the least forested region in the world. With the Potsdam Institute of Climate Impact Research, KAS RECAP conducts an expert workshop to discuss deforestation in the context of climate change.

International NGOs in Global Governance. The Case of Climate Negotiations and Climate Finance

Global governance is today not only the purview of state actors interacting through international treaties but also – and more and more – a space where many diverse non-state actors participate in decision making. It is particularly prominent in climate change diplomacy given the variety of scientific, policy, technical and financial expertise it requires and which non-state actors can provide. As demonstrated by the last conference of parties (COP24) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), INGOs participated in the negotiations as observers, representing the interests of local governments, indigenous people, women, youth, business and industry, and the scientific community.

Investing in Energy Efficiency: Enhancing Hong Kong’s Policy Framework

Experiences from Metropolitan Areas in China, Japan and Europe
Buildings account for a significant portion of overall energy consumption in metropolitan cities. Improving energy efficiency of buildings is one of the key policies for cities to mitigate climate change. A launch event will present the key findings of the research project by the BEC, supported by KAS RECAP on effective energy management. It compares buildings’ energy efficiency measures of different cities with the situation in Hong Kong and offers policy recommendations to the local Government.

Conference of the KAS Legal Alumni in Asia on the Legal Issues of Food, Water and Resource Security

Former Asian recipients of the KAS scholarship programmes in the field of law met in Hong Kong on 23 to 26 November 2015 for their annual workshop, which has now become a tradition. This year’s seventeen participants from China, Korea, Cambodia and Vietnam are currently working in various areas of the law, as lawyers and notaries, academics at universities and other institutes and in the government agencies of their countries.

Energy Storage Summit Japan 2015

The production and storage of renewable energies is crucial to achieve low-carbon societies. The KAS regional project energy security and climate change (RECAP) and Messe Düsseldorf co-organised the Energy Storage Summit 2015 Japan to discuss the current and future contribution of energy storage systems (ESS) to the energy transformation in Germany, Japan and the United States. In the Energy Storage Summit in Tokyo on 11-12 November 2015, the political framework and business models of future energy storage solutions in Europe and Asia were discussed.

Understanding the UN Climate Change Conference COP21 in Paris

Simulation game for international students
The upcoming UN climate change conference COP21 in Paris was an important milestone for developing global sustainable climate politics. Over 50 international students simulated the climate negotiations at an event organised by KAS RECAP and the Hong Kong-America Center. In a first part of the workshop, climate experts and diplomats presented the position of their countries in regard to climate politics. As a second step groups of students representing different "countries" drafted position papers and presented them to the plenum to achieve a global compromise on a new climate change regime.
