Youth Voices from the Gulf Region

New Ideas and Experiences

Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s Regional Programme Gulf States and the Gulf Research Center are hosting a side event at COP28 (UAE) on December 8, 2023, at 12:00 pm at the Siemens Showcase Center, focusing on climate change engagement with youth from the Gulf region. This event is the outcome of a policy paper contest held by both organisations, with the top four papers chosen to present their ideas at COP28. The primary objectives are to amplify the voices of young individuals from the GCC nations on climate change, introduce innovative concepts to propose to their respective governments, and foster the creation of robust climate change networks among GCC youth.

Enhancing the Saudi-German Academic Exchange

In partnership with the Gulf Research Center, the Regional Programme Gulf States of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung will carry out a two-day workshop in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The workshop will bring together young researchers and practitioners from Germany and Saudi Arabia for two days of dialogue, exchange, and learning how to write policy papers about German-Saudi cooperation in the fields of energy, security, sports, and culture. Please note that this is a closed event.

The workshop will examine Saudi Arabia's progress on its Vision 2030 as it reaches the halfway mark.

Business Journalism - a genre of its own

KAS Regional Program Gulf-States continues its Journalist Seminar successfully

“Business Journalism” was the topic of a highly specialized seminar that continued the KAS training program for Emirati junior journalists. In addition to an introduction into the basics of Business Journalism the seminar’s main goal was to provide the participants with practical work experience. Visits to regional companies, presentations by commercial experts as well as research in local shopping malls provided ample opportunity. The articles written by the young journalists gave clear evidence of the seminar’s success.

Paneldiskussion zu Energieeffizenz, Regulierung und Erneuerbaren Energien

Gemeinsam mit der Abu Dhabi-Niederlassung der Wirtschaftshochschule INSEAD, dem Masdar Institute of Science and Technology sowie dem IRENA Innovation and Technology Center organisierte das Regionalprogramm Golf-Staaten eine Diskussionsrunde zu Innovationen im Bereich Erneuerbarer Energien und ihrer Förderung durch die Politik. Die Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung hatte hierzu Dr. Nikolaus Supersperger von der GIZ eingeladen, der vor allem die Bedeutung von Energieeffizienz betonte.

KAS bei der Abu Dhabi International Book Fair

Zum dritten Mal war Abu Dhabi in diesem Jahr Austragungsort der wirtschaftlich bedeutendsten Buchmesse im Nahen Osten. Diese Gelegenheit nutzte die Konrad-Adenauer Stiftung, um ihre Publikationen aus der arabischen Welt in Abu Dhabi zu präsentieren.

Nach den ersten beiden Basis-Seminaren begann diese Woche der vertiefende Teil unserer Journalistenakademie.In den kommenden Tagen werden Donata Riedel vom Handelsblatt und Nahost-Journalistin Anne Allmeling mit Unterstützung des arabischen Trainers Dr. Abbas Mustafa Sadig in die Welt des Wirtschaftsjournalismus einführen.

The seminar is part of the series of INSEAD Policy Breakfast’s held in Abu Dhabi, which allows leaders from the region to discuss current policy issues.

Seit einigen Tagen hat die Welle der Protestbewegungen in Nordafrika und dem Nahen Osten auch das Emirat Bahrain erfasst. Die Situation dort sei aber nur teilweise mit Tunesien oder Ägypten zu vergleichen, betont Thomas Birringer, Leiter des Regionalprogramms Golfstaaten der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung mit Sitz in Abu Dhabi, im Interview mit der Deutschen Welle. Bahrain kann einen deutlich höheren Wohlstand und mehr demokratische Strukturen vorweisen. Die Brüche verlaufen eher entlang von religiös-ethnischen Grenzen, so Birringer.

Journalist Seminar in Abu Dhabi successful

KAS Regional Program Gulf-States and National Media Council of Abu Dhabi train Emirati Journalists

Nine Emirati journalists successfully completed the first journalism training course offered by KAS Regional Program Gulf-States and the National Media Council in Abu Dhabi. During the week-long intense course the participants learned about the basics of journalistic research and writing. Dr. Muhammad Ayish, Media Advisor at the Office of the Chairman of the National Media Council and Jochen Markett, Journalism Trainer at KAS, devoted the first two days to reviewing the basic tools of good journalistic work and reemphasizing the importance of complying with these.

In context of the opening of the exhibition "The ideal world of dictatorship" on the Fall of the Berlin Wall at the American University in Kuwait (AUK), the Gulf Studies Center of AUK hosted a panel discussion titled "The Fall of the Berlin Wall: A Retrospective of Life in Germany Before & After 1990" on December 20th, 2010. Thomas Birringer, Regional Representative to the Gulf-States represented the KAS. He explained the effects of the Berlin Wall on people in both parts of Germany.
