Magistrates, judges and heads of judicial academies from Cambodia, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, Taiwan and Thailand, as well as from the host country Philippines and from Germany shared their experiences on challenges to the judicial integrity and independence, and approaches to these. As part of the event, a workshop with case studies was held to link up the topics to the actual reality of the judges’ profession. Participants identified areas of most urgent need for reform and propose concrete steps forward to protect the integrity and independence of the judiciary in the Asian region.

This regional conference also benefited from Diego García-Sayán's expert knowledge as UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers.

The UN Special Rapporteur and KAS signed an annual Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate on Judicial Integrity and Independence in the context of KAS’ worldwide Rule of Law Programme.
