KAS/Ubuntu Breakfast Discussion Series with Aubrey Matshiqi

“New or False Dawn: Dreaming a New South Africa into being” was the title of the keynote speech by renowned Political Analyst Aubrey Matshiqi at the Ubuntu Business Breakfast at the One&Only Hotel in Cape Town on 19th October 2018. The breakfast was jointly hosted by the South African Ubuntu Foundation (SAUF) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS).

Orientation training workshop for traditional leaders from Traditional Authority Khosolo in Mzimba (Malawi)

On 20 and 21 September 2018, another workshop for traditional leaders took place in Mzimba, Malawi. For two days, 60 participants were introduced to the new land law in Malawi. The workshop was financed by KAS and conducted in cooperation with the organisation partners National Association of Smallholder Farmers of Malawi (NASFAM) and Emmanuel Mlaka, Land Governance Expert at LandNet Malawi. The workshop was also accompanied by Mzimba Community Radio.

On 23rd and 24th August 2018 the workshop for traditional leaders of the Traditional Authority Daniel Gausi took place in Mzimba. For two days, 60 traditional leaders were introduced to the new land law in Malawi. The workshop was financed by KAS and carried out in cooperation with the organisation partners Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) and LandNet Malawi. The workshop was also accompanied by Mzimba Community Radio.

KAS/CFCR/SPL Breakfast Discussion Series 2018

On 18 October 2018, the fourth and last breakfast discussion of this year's series took place and was jointly hosted by the Centre for Constitutional Rights (CFCR), the School of Public Leadership (SPL) of Stellenbosch University and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS). The discussion focused on the question 'State-owned Entities in South Africa – Beyond Reform?'. The topic arises due to the poor state of State-Owned Enterprises (SOE’s) in contemporary South Africa, in terms of financials as well as in terms of Human Resources and Governance.

Orientation training workshop for traditional leaders on the new land law in Mzimba (Malawi)

On 21st and 22nd August 2018 the workshop for traditional leaders of the Traditional Authority Kampingo Sibande took place in Mzimba. For two days, 53 participants were introduced to the new land law in Malawi. The workshop was financed by KAS and carried out in cooperation with the organisation partners Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) and LandNet Malawi. The workshop was also accompanied by Mzimba Community Radio. The workshop is aimed at capacitating traditional authorities to consider the codified law and strengthen the position of women in issues of land use and land ownership. The workshops are intended to cover the developments of the land law reform process in Malawi and specific legislations in the new land law that support and protect women’s land ownership rights.

12. Dullah Omar Memorial Lecture with Naledi Pandor

"Entrenching a Human Rights Culture in South Africa - Problems, Prospects, Successes"

On the 9th October 2018, the 12th annual Dullah Omar Memorial Lecture took place at the University of Western Cape (UWC). Naledi Pandor, Minister of Higher Education and Training, was the guest speaker of this year’s lecture and focused her speech on the topic: “Entrenching a Human Rights Culture in South Africa – Problems, Prospects and Successes”. The event was hosted by the Dullah Omar Institute (DOI) at UWC in cooperation with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS).

On 1st and 2nd August 2018, another workshop for traditional leaders took place at Chikale Teachers Development Centre in Senior Traditional Authority Chikowi, in Zomba. For two days, 45 participants were introduced to the new land law in Malawi. The workshop was financed by KAS and carried out in cooperation with the organisation partners National Association for Smallholder Farmers in Malawi (NASFAM) and LandNet Malawi.

The Annual KAS/SAIIA Careers Evening in Cape Town

On October 2, 2018, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) in cooperation with the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) organized its annual careers evening for students of the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Cape Town (UCT). The event offered participants the opportunity to inform themselves and exchange ideas about career opportunities, career paths, scholarships and internships.

Zwischen Machtanspruch und Machtteilung: Südafrikas Parteien lernen den Umgang mit Koalitionen

Südafrikas Parteien zeigen im Vorwahljahr ein desolates Bild. Innere Zerrissenheit und kurzsichtiges Taktieren lassen die Wähler an der Regierungsfähigkeit ihrer Parteien zweifeln. Auf der einen Seite kommt die Dauerregierungspartei African National Congress (ANC) mit der Aufarbeitung der Korruptions- und Veruntreuungsskandale in den eigenen Reihen nur schleppend voran. Auf der anderen Seite hadern die Oppositionsparteien mit den Koalitionsregierungen auf lokaler Ebene, einem Modell, das eigentlich als Blaupause zur Machtablösung des ANC auf nationaler Ebene dienen sollte.
