“Beyond the Right to Life: Disability, Personhood & Participation” was the second event of the seminar series “Taking stock: Disability & Human Rights in contemporary South Africa” held at the Stellenbosch University on 07th May 2018. The event was co-hosted by the South African Holocaust and Genocide Foundation, the University of Stellenbosch (SU) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS). The seminar provided a platform to critically reflect on the situation of disabled people in South Africa.

The Centre for Constitutional Rights (CFCR) has for the past nine years annually presented a Human Rights Report Card. The Report Card measures the realisation of human rights in South Africa.

“Deadly Practices: Esidimeni and beyond” was the title of the first event of the seminar series “Taking stock: Disability & Human Rights in contemporary South Africa” on 16th April 2018, jointly organized by the South African Holocaust and Genocide Foundation in collaboration with the University of Stellenbosch and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS). The well attended event at the University of Stellenbosch provided the audience with a platform for an informed debate about the recent Life Esidimeni tragedy.

CRAFTING COMPETITIVE BUSINESS STRATEGIES IN A COMPLEX, DIGITAL AND FAST EVOLVING DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENT

“Crafting competitive business strategies in a complex, digital and fast evolving South African and international environment” was the title of the keynote speech by Abdullah Hassen Verachia at the Ubuntu Networking breakfast on 19th April 2018 at the Southern Sun Hotel in New-lands. The breakfast was jointly hosted by the South African Ubuntu Foundation (SAUF) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) with the aim to provide a platform for an informed debate on the current business climate in South Africa.

DDP Civic Education Training for CSOS and Community Builders

The Democracy Development Program (DDP) held a 3-day Civic Education training in South Coast, from 3-5 April 2018. The training was attended by different organizations from the Durban region as well as Pietermaritzburg.

Intersectional Leadership: Considering South Africa's Deaf Community

For the second time this year the Frederik van Zyl Slabbert Institute (FVZSI) at the Stellenbosch University (SUN) in cooperation with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) invited students and other interested listeners on 26th March 2018 to a panel discussion with the theme “Intersectional leadership: considering South Africa's Deaf Community”. The event took place on the SUN campus and formed part of the Discourse Café series, which aims to provide a platform for informed debate.

Community Awareness Outreach at Maluwa Village in Zomba, Malawi

The community outreach was aimed at boosting the knowledge in rural communities in Zomba about women’s rights to access, own, use and control land, and enhance the women’s capacity to protect and claim these rights.

Community Awareness Outreach at Sani II Village in Zomba-Malawi

The objective for the community awareness outreach was to contribute towards ensuring that women are informed of their rights and the traditional and codified legal context as well as possible legal recourse and show first steps of demanding these rights.

Managing Migration from Sub-Saharan Africa: The Developmental Approach

The event held at the Mountain Club of South Africa in Cape Town on the 22nd of March 2018, jointly hosted by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) Western Cape Branch and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), provided a platform for a lively debate on the question of how to manage migration from Sub-Saharan Africa in a developmental approach.

Orientation Workshop for Traditional Leaders in Zomba

Sensitization training workshop for traditional leaders on the new land law in Malawi.

The orientation workshop for traditional leaders was held at Nsondole Teachers Development Centre in Zomba-Malawi. It aimed at ensuring that in settling land disputes, traditional authorities increasingly consider codified law and strengthen the position of women in issues of land use and land ownership. The workshop focused on how the past and present legal framework of land laws have undermined women’s land rights in Malawi. It was an introductory training workshop for two lower tiers in the traditional leadership in Malawi namely Group Village Headmen/women and Village Headmen/women.
