On October 17, 2019, the Centre for Unity and Diversity (CUD) and KAS will be hosting the third roundtable discussion, which will be followed by an interactive Q&A round. Our three speakers will be discussing hate speech as a topic of growing importance in the age of social media as well as implications for the South African government and society.

Join us for the third discussion for 2019 hosted by the Centre for Unity in Diversity (CUD) and supported by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS).

Topic: Freedom of Expression v Hate Speech: Are we Striking a Balance in South Africa?

At the roundtable discussion we will be discussing the importance of freedom of expression; recent findings by the South African Human Rights Commission and the Courts on hate speech; the psychological impact of hate speech on communities and whether current remedies available in South Africa are adequate.

Format: Discussion and Q&A

Speakers:

Ms Sara Gon: Policy Fellow at the Institute for Race Relations (IRR), a think-tank that promotes political and economic freedom.
Prof Juan Nel: Research Professor of Psychology at the University of South Africa and former President of the Psychological Society of South Africa (PsySSA). Prof Nel represents PsySSA on the Hate Crimes Working Group Steering Committee.
Ms Christine Botha: Manager at the Centre for Constitutional Rights (CFCR)
